My message to the Commission

I delivered this message during Citizens Comments at the February 11, 2014 Commission meeting:

I have some handouts, but only enough for Commissioners Linfante, Bendel, and Brumfield. I passed out 3 different cigarette ads, but all 3 are required by law to print a warning from the Surgeon General.

Surgeon General's Warning lower left corner

I believe there are nine different warnings to pick from. These warnings must be on every pack of cigarettes and every cigarette advertisement. Commissioners Bendel, Linfante, and Brumfield, are there warnings from the Surgeon General on your ads?

Why am I passing these ads out to you? Mt. Lebanon is getting artificial turf, no matter what. You three have made it happen. In fact, it was stated on my Lebo Citizens blog yesterday that Commissioner Bendel will be hailed as a hero when this turf goes up. Not if the Sports Advisory Board can raise the funds. When. I have spoken to parents of four different field sports here in Mt. Lebanon. They had no idea about the EPA's warnings regarding artificial turf and NONE of them had heard of your plans to artificially turf Middle and Wildcat Fields. Needless to say, they are quite concerned.

At a previous commission meeting, I printed out the webpage from the EPA, listing these warnings. I also stood here and talked about these warnings. I believe it is your duty to convey these EPA warnings to all parents of children who will be playing on these toxic fields. In fact, it should be required and disclosed on all registration forms for youth field sports.

I am just ill thinking about how my municipal and school district tax dollars will be used to fund and maintain artificial turf, let alone to allow healthy and active kids play on these toxic fields. I want to be able to sleep at night, knowing that I have done everything in my power to get that message out to parents. There are moratoriums and voters rejecting artificial turf all over the world. It absolutely needs to be stopped here in Mt. Lebanon. One of these days, we will be hearing about turf abatement, just like we have asbestos abatement. In the meantime, the EPA warning should be required and disclosed on all registration forms for youth field sports.

After I spoke, Commissioner Fraasch pointed out something to the effect that the entire commission can be held responsible, not just the three I mentioned.

Update February 12, 2014 12:10 AM It appears that we have someone on the Commission who is quite familiar with the dangers of asbestos.

  1. Thank you, Elaine. Playing on synthetic turf is the new smoking.

  2. YIKES! Between the health hazards of artificial turf and the effects of cellular telephone use by young children we may not have any kids left!

  3. Hum. Toxic materials are what keeps him in business.

  4. What did the ESB say?

  5. 8:13 AM, I hope to publish their official statement here, but in one sentence, I would say that they are against artificial turf. OK, I lied, in more than one sentence- they felt misled by Kristen Linfante. It was quite entertaining to watch the commission and SAB representatives squirm while they were being scolded by the ESB. If there is only one chance to watch a municipal meeting video, tune in this afternoon when it gets uploaded on the mtlebanon.org website.

  6. Don't miss Kristen try to talk her way out of misleading the ESB. It is priceless.

  7. Does anyone know an easy way to have the commission discussion or meeting could be transcribed? The back and forth about whether Kristen Linfante lied about the ESB's position on turf needs to be documented.

  8. I wonder if this free app Dictation Pro would transcribe the conversation?
Might require two tablets, one to play the recording and another to run Dictation Pro.

  9. After listening to the replay of the turf discussion it is apparent Linfante and Brumfield have no intention of listening to evidence from municipal boards such as Parks or the ESB on artificial turf.
Brumfield pretty much dictates that the commissioners aren't obligated to solicit opinions from boards, from neighbors living next to fields or from taxpayers.
Basically, he and Linfante thumbed their noses at the community, said we have the majority and we'll damn well do as we please.
Kelly Fraasch did her job, the ESB did theirs and they did it very well.
Now it is up to the rest of us to do ours. What are we going to do?

  10. Email and talk to everyone you know about the concerns about turf and the plan. Encourage everyone to contact the Commission by phone or email.

  11. 3:22 PM, I was at a commission meeting in July 2012 where residents from Cedar Blvd. did their jobs by speaking during Citizens Comments
I have been saying all along that artificial turf is a done deal. Commissioners Bendel, Linfante and Brumfield are not going to listen to anyone. Brumfield, of all people, knows about toxic materials. That is his livelihood. Franklin has bullied his way through different boards, including the SAB and the PAB. Look who is coming to the SAB meetings now. How many nonfield sports are represented? Few. He has submitted his application to be part of the Mt. Lebanon Community Endowment. Linfante lying is nothing new. And Bendel seems to be Brumfield's puppet.

They don't care what the ESB, Cedar Blvd. residents, EPA, PAB,or their constituents say. The Mt. Lebanon Democratic Committee list the first principal of the Democratic Party: Be GREEN by pursuing the efficiencies and benefits of being a green community (does this include poisoning our waterways and our children?)

    They are bad news!

  12. Maybe we should contact the Democratic Committee of Mt Lebanon and ask why the Dems are voting against the goals they support. Interesting.
