He finished in the top three each of the past three years, but the race was all his Saturday morning on the North Shore.
Baun was second coming out of the swim portion in the Allegheny River but first out of the transition to the bike and spent the rest of the race alone in front. He won with a time of 55 minutes, 53 seconds, beating second-place finisher Joey Pickens, 18, of Glenelg, Md., by more than four minutes.
And there is this from The Almanac--
ReplyDelete"The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association announced Don Kelly as the Detroit Tigers 2014 Heart and Hustle Award winner. Every team in Major League Baseball has one recipient of the award, and it is the second year in a row that Kelly is the Tigers’ award winner."
"Kelly, 34, is in his seventh year in the major leagues. The Mt. Lebanon High School graduate has been on the Tigers’ Opening Day roster the last five seasons. He was an NAIA First Team All-American shortstop at Point Park from 1999-01. He was drafted in the eighth round of the 2001 MLB Draft and made his big-league debut in 2007 with his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates."
Can you imagine, he somehow managed to make the big leagues without artificial turf. Wonder if the inconsistencies of our grass fields made him a better player.
Did he play lacrosse in high school? Im guessing he did not. Of course, the turf will help with all the Lebo kids being drafted by the professional lacrosse league. You know, the one you see all over ESPN and CBS. Yawn.
ReplyDeleteHow about, "Congratulations, Ian!" Let's not make this about turf.

Nothing is on the District's website. I thought it should be mentioned somewhere!

While I was on the District website, I noticed the photo of the new Principal of the Month and this message.
ReplyDelete"Technical Issues Temporarily Delay School Board Meeting Broadcast
July 31, 2014
Due to technical issues with a new recording program for the School Board meetings, the video of the July 21, 2014 Joint School Board Discussion and Regular Meeting is not running on MTLSD.tv Channel 19. We are working to correct the issues and apologize for the inconvenience."
The only recording is on www.lebocitizens.com

Yes, congratulation to both athletes, for their perseverance, skill and love for their sport.
ReplyDeleteWish them much future success.
But, if we can't talk about the roll of grass fields here, be sure to cut off discussion of building future winners if we install turf.
Congratulations to Ian! He's one of our top track stars at Mt. Lebanon and a great kid too. It's nice to see his years of training have paid off.
ReplyDeleteThe baseball players are stronger.
ReplyDeleteThe bats are made of aluminum, the ball goes farther.
The baseballs are more active.
The ball will slide faster over turf than grass.
I'm glad I don't play the infield.
