Mt. Lebanon Parents Raise Health Concerns About Synthetic Turf

  1. All sorts of towns are stopping their projects this week and reconsidering their options.

  2. Turf also causes more concussions because kids can run faster on turf. Here is a link from UPMC explaining the different kinds of concussions and the effects on kids.

  3. Artificial turf does not solve the solid waste disposal headache of used tires; it merely transfers the problem of ultimate disposal from private interests to taxpayers and school boards,

If Mount Lebanon has to replace and/or build two turf fields in one year they may not have funds to pay for staff increases or necessary public improvements. Smart board members and commissioners won't run for reelection and the problem will be face by inexperienced public officials.

  4. Instead of Pay it Forward, Mt Lebanon is Owe it Forward. Thanks, Commission!

  5. Gov. Tom Corbett was at a home in Cranberry Township, this weekend. He was blasting opponent Tom Wolf as a guy who will raise your taxes.
“It’s going to be you that gets taxed more,” he said. “It’s not going to be all companies. It is everybody who’s going to have to take this, because Wolf wants to increase taxes by $6 billion.

Thanks KDKA, that' s really scary.

  6. 9:43, worried about future "inexperienced" public officials? What about the ones we have now? Like a school board that underestimated the HS by over $13 million and Brumfield who blogged the following.

    From Brumfield's blog—
"This year I returned to the field issue.  My first proposal was to support the recommendation of the youth sports organizations and turf Middle and wildcat field....  ...As discussed above this would have addressed the field issue by making current fields more useful.
Turf allows play to begin in early March rather than April and allows it to continue well into November.Turfing Middle and Wildcat would have created a playing area that would have created three competition fields (they cannot be used simultaneously) a full size baseball field, a youth baseball field and our first regulation size competition soccer and lacrosse field. That field of course could also be used for football or
field hockey. Based on estimates developed by the youth sports representatives this plan would have cost $750,000-$900,000.
Included in those options would be an eco-friendly turf option."

[BOY, THE SAB AND ENGINEER SURE DROPPED THE BALL ESTIMATING AN ECO-FRIENDLY TURF FOR >$900,000. I GUESS CLOSE REALLY DOES EXIST ONLY IN HORSESHOES AND HANDGRENADES. IT SURE DOESN'T EXIST IN OUR MUNICIPAL ENGINEERING OR ADVISORY BOARD PROMISES!
I LOVE BRUMFIELD'S CLOSING PROMISE AS WELL. HAS ANYONE EVER GOTTEN A RESPONSE FROM BRUMFIELD WHEN YOU EMAILED HIM ABOUT TURF?]

"I am sorry for subjecting anyone who took the time to read this to such a long-winded explanation. I did not believe that people were accurately reflecting what had occurred over the last few months when they discussed these issues. To the extent that others were being blamed and or ridiculed for what, in some respects, was my independent action I wanted to set the record straight. I also wanted to give people who disagree with me the rationale behind my decision. I will happily respond to anyone’s questions on my decision, please feel free to email me."

NOW YOU KNOW WHY WE'RE HAVING THIS RALLY— TO GET WHAT BRUMFIELD PROMISED... AN ECO-FRIENDLY TURF FOR UNDER $900,000.

    STAND AND DELIVER, DAVE!

  7. Isn't it interesting that the commissioners that approved turf have as yet committed to attend the rally to hear their constituents concerns about artificial turf.
I guess this why they continually say they have overwhelming majorities when it comes to their freespending ways.
    They tune out everybody else.

  8. Why didn't you show us the report from Channel 11? Is it because you don't want people to see people who are in favor of turf? Or because you weren't in it?

  9. Thank you, 8:16 AM. You didn't let me down. I knew a troll would ask this. I am willing to share the link of the WPXI report, but I was trying to protect the woman from the scrutiny of my readers. The first thing some readers do is find out where they live. Then it's whose ward. Followed by when they moved here, if they are underassessed, and if they pay their taxes. Do you really want me to do that to her?

  10. 8:16, I guess you are suggesting that Elaine should do more indepth, fair & balanced reporting of the issues in our little hamlet than our highly compensated PIO that instructed speakers at a taxpayer funded forum on turf not to talk about the health issues surrounding turf!
    Got it.

  11. A true Democrat....Kelly Fraasch.
I was proud to be a D once again.

  12. It's not a D or R issue, 1245.

  13. Yes but we have a full group of Ds serving as Commissioners and I was losing faith when they are pushing agendas like turf or killing deer. Turf and shooting deer is not what I would call a D agenda.

  14. It is very much a Democrat issue! Anyone that dares to question one of these three idiots is bullied beyond belief. I seen my commissioner turn his back and say things that can't be repeated here because an elderly resident questioned how all these "sport related" spending was going to be paid for. I've heard him tell people "To move if they couldn't afford the taxes" too. And then approve of low-come housing that will end up costing taxpayers and ruining another neighborhood. But there is some hope that this moron gets elected by the fools of freebies to a higher office and leaves Mt Lebanon.
