A Community With Character[s] Part 2

On the Municipal side of Mt. Lebanon government, we have five commissioners, each representing their Ward.

Lame duck President is Kristen Linfante. Kristen has taken the commission to a whole new level. Once respectable, the commission meetings have become a three ring circus with Kristen at the helm. Threats to shut down the meeting, lies, and personal attacks toward constituents and their employers are just some of Kristen's signature moves. A self-proclaimed environmentalist, Kristen is in favor of artificial turf, killing all the deer, and igniting people. My all time favorite piece from her blog, Real Lebo, is an attack toward me. My Mother Taught Me Never To Lie  Kristen wrote, "There are two things that I just can't tolerate - mean people and liars." My commissioner was projecting all the way back in 2010. She will tell you that I ran against her and lost, but she still doesn't understand that she ran unopposed in the 2011 Primary. I ran against incumbent Joe DeIuliis and lost. Kristen's term ends in 2015. Not soon enough.

President Elect John "The Refiner" Bendel ran unopposed in the 2011 commission election, after his opponent pulled out of the race. I understand John is not real popular with his constituents in Ward 1 in the area of sidewalks, traffic calming, and artificial turf. John is the commission liaison to the Sports Advisory Board and went to the SAB in October and asked them how they wanted to spend the pot of gold, otherwise known as the unassigned funds. Bend It With Bendel vetted FieldTurf partner, Dr. Andrew McNitt before the June 12 turf project presentation held at Mellon Middle School. John is seeking reelection and may not be the only Ward 1 Democrat running in the 2015 Primary.

Kelly Fraasch is my adopted commissioner. Kelly is the epitome of elected officials. She listens to constituents and tries to seek common ground with critics. A hard worker, Kelly is dedicated to serving Mt. Lebanon residents in a fair and professional manner. I don't always agree with Kelly, but she does have my utmost respect. Kelly's term ends in 2015 and I hope she seeks reelection.

Steve Silverman is the commission newbie. As commissioner elect, Steve hit the ground running with the turf project, asking for a corporate sponsorship from Dick's Sporting Goods. My late husband, account executive and on the food broker advisory board for Gatorade, would have appreciated Steve's efforts to build Gatorade sales through artificially turfing a field. Steve's term ends in 2017.

Commissioner Dave Brumfield introduced the idea of turfing Mellon Middle School Field during the February 28, 2012 Joint Discussion Session. Don't ask him the definition of "fair." Not a Dave Brumfield fan. We're stuck with Dave for two more years with his term ending in 2017.

Manager Steve Feller reports to the commissioners but manages the various departments within the municipality. He is also the Open Records Officer responsible for granting or denying Right To Know Requests by taking the full 35 days, rather than five, for legal reviews every time. Screwing up the pool bid opening, the Public Safety Building, and approving the first change order for the turf project without the commission's approval are just some of his many accomplishments.

Andrew McCreery is our new director of finance. Andrew stepped up to the plate when I asked a member of the PIO for her assistance (and was ignored) with the 102 year old resident who was being recognized. However, Moody's did downgrade our rating since he took over.

Tom Kelley is retiring soon. Tom kept Rockwood Park in great shape and declared a cease fire in Rockwood Park after many phone calls to him. I will never forget that.

Susan Morgans is the town diva. As our Public Information Officer, editor of mtl Magazine and Community Relations Board staff liaison, Susan has a unique perspective on our fine community. A 1965 Lebo graduate, Susan Fleming Stroyd Morgans feels that she owns this town. Her biggest fans, Laura Pace Lilley and Merle Jantz, report to Susan. Hide your recorders when you see Susan.

Keith McGill, our municipal planner, has been involved with the Zamagias fiasco since Day 1. Keith informed the Planning Board about the turf project, saying that there is no need for their input. According to Marcia Taylor, Keith and Steve Feller have lunch with Marcia monthly. It is nice that they keep in touch.

Gateway Engineers' Dan Deiseroth is our municipal engineer. Dan is a financial supporter of the toxic turf project and bills Mt. Lebanon for his work on the project. It's a great gig. No conflict of interest there.

David Donnellan is our director of recreation. A dedicated employee, David built the climbing wall at the swimming pool. Concerned with loss of revenue, David wanted to keep the golf course open during the archery hunt. David also rushed the swimming pool construction in order to open on Fathers Day. A non-voting member of the Sports Advisory Board and member of the super secret Turf Project Task Force, David was instrumental in making the toxic turf project a reality.

Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Coleman McDonough took charge of the now suspended archery program. I have a lot of respect for Coleman, but question his judgment to keep the golf course open during the hunt.

Nick Sohyda is the chief of our award winning fire department. A great guy.

Eric Milliron is Mt. Lebanon's Economic Development Officer and manager of the Commercial Districts Office. There's no drama with Eric, one of Mt. Lebanon's greatest assets.

Phil Weis is the Municipality's solicitor. I like Phil, but he has to do what he has to do.

Marcia Taylor retired from the Municipality earlier in 2013 as assistant manager and finance director. Marcia ruled with an iron fist. Talk to her about police pensions.

The puppet masters behind this cast of characters are the following:

Barbara Logan, master gardener and former commissioner, wants deer dead in the worst way. She donated to Kristen Linfante's political campaign.

It is said that Carolyn Byham, another gardener, former commissioner and deer hater, is willing to pay for an entire deer cull. The commission should talk to her about funding the $68,000 dedicated to deer management for 2015.

Dave Franklin is legen (wait for it) dary. He likes to let everyone know that he is an attorney every chance he can. Dave's legal opinion on the safety of synthetic turf and the EPA is documented here on Lebo Citizens. Dave's dedication to the turf project fundraising is full time. Dave is a part time member of the Parks Advisory Board, but full time Parks Advisory Board Liaison to the Sports Advisory Board. He is a non-voting member of the SAB, but through his super secret Turf Project Task Force and being married to a voting SAB member, Dave gets the job done.

David Reese, one of the trolls here on Lebo Citizens, wrote a letter to the editor of the PG on 09.01.11 explaining that he is not tax averse and wants to pay higher taxes. You should have a conversation about that at your next family gathering, Dave.

What can I say about the member of the super secret Turf Project Task Force, Chip Dalesandro, who came to my door unannounced? Not much.

He Who Shall Not Be Named - see above.

I hope this Municipality Who's Who guide is helpful. I may have inadvertently left out someone, so this list may be updated. Since 2015 will be a year of change with elections for five seats for school board directors and three seats for commission, I am optimistic that the majority of our local government will be a positive change in direction for Mt. Lebanon.

Happy New Year.

  1. Elaine does this "David Reese" guy live on Crystal Drive? I'll hold off till I know if this is the guy or not.

  2. 1:37 AM, I would rather not say. A few years back, I had forwarded some not so nice emails that I received from him to our police chief.

  3. You are rude and your comments are obnoxious. Publish that.

  4. Elaine Why would you do that? Mr. Reese loves to tell everyone that will listen how he has "served for many years on panels for interviewing, selecting and promoting both Sworn Police Officers and Career Firefighters in our community because I CARED about these professionals who serve and protect us, and felt this was another way to give back something to the community." But here is why he has a problem with you... " I'm not a "blogger"; I'm a doer. ". But in reality he's just another want-a-be jock. And yes he lives on that street! Just a few doors away from Brumfield.

  5. Certainly, 10:23 PM. Does it bother you that I have more guts than you do?
    Elaine

  6. Not sure if "guts" is the right word. Indifference to what other people think of you? Persecutory delusions? A belief that the best defense is a good offense? A tenacious refusal to let things go? A deep desire to win, a desire which trumps being correct?

Have you ever considered the idiom: Living well is the best revenge? If you're so unhappily consumed, maybe disengaging from this nonsense is the best step?

How about the idiom: If you meet a jerk in the morning, he's a jerk. If you meet jerks all day long, you're the jerk. Similar to the one: If you're playing poker and you can't spot the mark, you're the mark.

Step away from the keyboard. Get a hobby. Disengage. Find some new enemies, perhaps ones who are evil writ large, rather than just garden-variety local-politics evil. Bad things are still happening in Darfur. Even you must realize that genocide is worse than artificial turf. If your tastes skew more local, consider working to unimpair the Allegheny River, especially since you showed some interest in reducing pollution in regard turf runoff. There are lots of good options out there.

I think most people will objectively agree that creating your own Nixon's Enemies List is a troubling sign. At least Colson had the good sense to keep Nixon's list private.

  7. 9:51 AM, guts is the perfect word. I sign my name to everything. You would rather remain a troll.

  8. 9:51, that would all make sense if it weren't for the fact that these people being talked about are spending taxpayers money and guiding what this community will become in the future.
This isn't a fiefdom and Elaine and every other resident has the inalienable right to express their opinion s to what happens in this community.
I ask you why should Elaine- how do you put it- "let things go"?
Why don't we dispense with rules of order, ordinances, laws and especially the press.
The royals, once in power are free to do whatever and to whomever, what they want.
In your world if they want to pave over every bit of green space with plastic grass and tire rubber they should be allowed too.
They want to gun down some wildlife next to our home, by all means they have a right... And we should say nothing about it.
I'd say your vision of community is the real troubling sign.

  9. 9:51 where were you back in 2010 when our esteemed commission president said: ""I've found that you have to work a little harder to make your own community when you weren't born here," adds Linfante, a professional freelance violist who moved here when her husband took a seat with the Pittsburgh Symphony."

Wasn't Mt. Lebanon a community before she got here? She had to go and make her own community? Why? Ours wasn't good enough?
    http://www.popcitymedia.com/innovationnews/reallebo0120.aspx

How about fitting in? How about being neighborly? Do her perceptions of the community fit the reality. Tom Moertel proves that deer aren't the threat to our lives that Linfante claims. Should we just shut up and let her proceed with her extermination?

Now you want long-time resident Elaine Gillen to shut-up and go saunter off to a corner and be quiet.
    Thank God she says No.

  10. Wow Elaine, you certainly chewed on Kristen's wrong side today!
I don't think she liked your summary much.

  11. Oh is this David Reese another "HE who can't be named" @sswipe? I was invited to an event and WATCHED him sit by while a disabled woman attempted to carry items into her house. He sat there and made jokes. Then he said some very offensive comments when she responded to him. I wouldn't allow ANY of my kids to be coached by him or his wife. We'll never again accept an invitation to any events he is at or associated with. I only wish it occurred today when everyone has cell phones with cameras. But funny he wants to pay more taxes but has taken steps to reduce his property taxes. Elaine believe me when I say he's a loser, has always been a loser and will remain a loser and not worth the air he breathes.

  12. Sorry Off Topic but has anyone heard about the funding of the turf project? I was talking to several MTL people over the holidays and they said that the project costs increased but no knew where the extra money was coming from. Since money doesn't grow on trees except in DC what has been cut or when do we learn of the tax increase?

  13. 9:51

Colson also ended up being awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal. So I say, hang in there, Elaine. Despite the hate in your heart, there is always hope.

And perhaps, 951, you should follow your own advice. Trolling doesn't actually produce anything except amusement for the rest of us. You seem to object to this blog and its contents yet you went out of your way to post something. That makes no sense.
Get a hobby. Step away from the keyboard. I encourage you to move forward on your efforts to help in Darfur (you ARE involved, right?). This is your chance to show the rest of us just how incorrect and misguided we are. Go make a difference and then shove it in our collective face. Deal?

"A belief that the best defense is a good offense? A tenacious refusal to let things go? A deep desire to win, a desire which trumps being correct?" (Your words). Wow, that could apply to many people in this community and their behavior when faced with differing opinions, including you. That groupthink, homogeneous, one-track mind mentality is dangerous and destructive.

    Thanks for the laugh, though.

  14. 3:13 PM, that wasn't Kristen. I thought it was pretty obvious who it was. However, that doesn't mean she wasn't one of the unapproved comments I received today saying that I was a terrible person.
    Elaine

    ReplyDelete
  15. Michelle,
Only Steve Feller and Andrew McCreery know where the money is coming from. The first change order came out of the traffic lights at Greenhurst and Bower Hill project. Maybe they should take it out of the deer management money.

  16. "The most sacred of the duties of a government [is] to do equal and impartial justice to all its citizens." --Thomas Jefferson

Something our commissioners have lost sight of, evidenced by their treatment of newcomers reassessments and the right to ask questions and present evidence in a turf town hall.

Think about Jefferson's words for a moment then think back to Linfante's participation in the "What the Kluck" protest.
Then compare that to the "open" turf town hall held under her leadership in which the information and the questions were completely controlled.

Now we have 9:51 suggesting that Elaine should go away.

  17. 6:06 PM, the best way to handle trolls is to ignore them. "Don't feed the trolls" is what the experts advise.

All he is doing is taking the focus off of the list of Lebo characters.

Does the "Troll" understand that their IP Address is right out there for all to see if they want to do some Sniffing? Sniff sniff sniff.... Right Dave?

  19. MtL has several people in leadership positions who conspire to cheat. This cheating impacts the work ethic of everyone in the system. Cheating does not inspire admiration, motivation, trust or ingenuity. Cheating inspires nothing but malaise and more cheating.

If Elaine is snarky it's because she knows more about what is going on here than ANYONE else. People confide in her and she also does her own homework.

Those who continue to fight Elaine will lose. Too many people, both near and far, know that she tells the truth along with her own opinion.

Which Dave? Is it the really overweight, obnoxious attorney with glasses or...

  21. Elaine,

Having lived here in Mt. Lebo for only 3 1/2 years, I found both of your summaries of town characters quite helpful...

... And while certainly through a distinct point of view some could quarrel with, everything seemed pretty accurate to me from what I have learned so far.

2015 will be a very interesting year in Mt. Lebo. Who would have thought 2014 would bring two formal protests--one with over 75 people present? Protests, in Mt. Lebo? Protesters as young as 2 and as old as 82? Yes, indeed.

But that is just the beginning. Disparate factions are coalescing ... that is when you know the revolution is near...

  22. Jason you should have seen all the people that came out and protested about the Post Office building (Castle Shannon Blvd) that once was a grocery store and when it closed became a porno warehouse. There had to be atleast 4 or 5 thousand. Rumor had that the owners wanted to open a retail store there too. The commissioners claimed they couldn't stop it and the Police Chief who just happened to live right across the street added fuel to the fire by claiming that commissioners were friends with the porno owners and that's why they were allowing it. The press claimed that "Organized Crime" was NOT coming to LeboLand but there. In fact not long after this all happened a FBI raid happened several blocks away. The old coin-operated laundromat at the corner of Scott and Castle Shannon Blvd (where the gallery is now) was also raided. I was in middle school then and remember it being mentioned in church and talked about at home. It was somewhere in the mid 1970's time period. Neighbors that hated each other came together to fight it. So not much has changed. Just the actors themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jim: Do you think 4 or 5 thousand would come out to protest a porno shop in MtL now? I fear they would not. Kids are putting the most horrific things (they probably find from adults) on social media these days and no one seems to care. The kids have access to this smut through their phones, etc.

You would think the schools would help with this matter -- but they don't. Parents, municipal employees, etc -- they all turn a blind eye. I find it unbelievable.

Don't think that exposure to these things doesn't impact kids -- it does -- and not for the better.

Maybe if our school district didn't sound out holiday greetings with the theme of "shake it off" after a teacher puts down another teacher, MtL could actually start demonstrating that it cares about what happens to kids and the wider community.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Are you seriously suggesting the ML school district could actually help guide student morality? Ha. That's like asking the Kardashians to teach kids humility.
I dont want the dysfunctional district involved in any aspect of anyone's personal life. Their mission is to provide an academic foundation for the young minds passing through their halls. The moral compass should be oriented by parents, not school staff.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Interesting read pertinent to the last couple of comments.

"Moral Education - A Brief History of Moral Education, The Return of Character Education, Current Approaches to Moral Education"

    http://education.stateuniversity.com/pages/2246/Moral-Education.html

9:39 are you suggesting we leave the moral compass only in the hands of tough guys that physically threaten women or hit and run drivers that leave the scene of a pedestrian accident.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What the hell are you talking about? I just stated morality shouldnt be in the hands of public school employees. No idea how you got from there to your comment. Are you actually asserting that all parents are thugs and commit crimes?? Learn how to read.

    ReplyDelete
  27. OMG, this is about the municipality and those who are running it. Let's stay on topic.
    Elaine

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why don't you learn to read 10:59, show me where I said all parents are thugs and commit crimes?
I was only suggesting that philosophy, civics and religion studies should be reintroduced into the schools.
I think it is on topic since many students have a hard time understanding the Bill of Rights, The PA Constitution etc and comprehending how and why they were created.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 12:55 PM, I am not going to argue with you. I asked to stay on topic. This post has nothing to do with students. This is not about the school district. This post is about the municipality. Take it up on Part 1, if you wish to continue this.

  30. Sorry Elaine I only wanted to point out that Mt Lebanon has always had serious issues but OUR parents stood up and fought the fight. My Dad took off work and attended the meeting because we, his kids, had to walk home by that building. It was worth it to him to see less $$$s in his paycheck. I still believe that there will be a tipping point here and parents will stand up and fight. What that event will be.... Who knows. But I'll bet my last $ our commissioners will be on the opposite side of it.

  31. Geez.. clearly your objective is to hurt people. So sad. When someone commits their life to attackign other people, it is clearly a message of pain and anger towards the world. May you find peace some day.

  32. Thank you, Kristen. May you find peace some day, as well.

  33. Very interesting 11:59.
Where was that compassion, understanding and sense of fair play when Linfante chose to snicker, giggle and make snide comments while Elaine presented the 4,000 signature HS renovation petition?
Was the "What the Kluck" street protest respectful?
    NOOOOW you want civility!
