I'm in the Washington Post

'Volunteer archers'

No mention of our densely populated community of 33,000 people packed in six square miles.
No mention that we have no idea where the killing is taking place, so that we could protect ourselves and our pets.
No mention that we are a walking community. No school buses here.

I wish Santa left me money under the tree to pursue this. It is madness.

  2. I think we should get high powered drones with 4k cameras and fly them over every home in Lebo until we have found these "donors." Last I checked it isn't illegal to fly drones! I would be willing to supply my drone. Who is with me?

  3. Something I've never understood.
The properties are donated, the archers were volunteers and we have so many deer we can't help but to bump into them.
So what did White Buffalo do to earn $9,000?

  4. 1:37 AM, no worries. Your tax dollars are being wasted killing deer. I'm trying to avoid the killing fields. I think my money was well spent. Unfortunately, the commissioners don't value people's safety as much as their privacy.

  5. The article was about the court decision and right to know. It was not about deer.

  6. Awfully presumptuous of 1:37 to tell other people what to do with their money!

  7. Privacy is safety, I hope you can atleast admit that.

  8. Clearly, Mt Lebanon is not about unity. The commissioners use the deer issue to divide people. Give some thought to why they like to keep the community divided. There is no strength without unity. The like to weaken the community and keep people edgy and preoccupied, so they can....

  9. That is 2:26 if the presumption is that people want to know where hunting is occurring so they can harm someone or something.

Personally, I don't think you can presume that.

  10. I love the conspiracy theorists.... The commissioners are killing the deer to keep us divided on purpose! They're doing it to keep us occupied while they further corrupt our town! Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? Of course people will disagree over the issues...

  11. It certainly draws attention away from PAYT, SMART or whatever the feel goody acronym of the day is being used to push paying for garbage collection onto individual households and off the municipality.

  12. Has anyone stopped for a moment and wondered why the municipality needs to raise taxes.
Have they already burned through the 2012 reassessment revenue?
Yeah sure, it was revenue neutral. Take a look at your tax bill and tell me it was neutral.
Supposedly, we're in an Obama-created vibrant economy, where unemployment is down and wages up. If that's true MTL's wage tax revenue must be up too.
They tout all the new businesses and restaurants uptown, don't those operations employ people that pay the workers privilege tax and if residents, wage tax?
How about the increase in metered parking?
The new fees, for block parties and permits?
We have new housing arriving just around the corner and those expensive condos will be purchased by people with substantial incomes which of course will be taxed.
Speaking of housing, according to the reassessment our homes of increased in value so there is a windfall in transfer taxes.

You'd think with all the economic prosperity Lebo would be rolling in dough.

    So let's review some things.

They purchased a parking app that supposedly makes it easy to find a parking spot with your cell phone... sort of a "Look Down Lebo" moment that cost us how much a year?

Speaking of "Look Up Lebo", sit at any uptown location and observe how effective that campaigns been on drivers and pedestrians.

Let's stop now on the deer problem. We're approaching $200,000 or more on over the past several years trying to... ha, ha... reduce accidents by 50%.
Jokes on you taxpayers... according to the numbers accidents went up and the deer haters are still bitchin'!

Shall I go on 6:36, about how our community is being run?

    1. None of that is some big conspiracy, though. Those are all just facts, nothing is being covered up. The original commentor basically said/implied that the commissioners like to keep us divided so they can do things without citizens knowing. Those are all known actions by the commissioners/Lebo, so where is the well-orchestrated cover up to screw the residents of Lebo, which at times, commenters on this blog seem to wish would happen, just so they would have more things to be angry about.

  13. No no no 5:43, privacy is always safety, that doesn't stop just because you don't THINK you can presume something bad would happen. Privacy is safety in more than just the deer situation. Think bigger picture, why are tech companies like Apple and Amazon refusing to provide law enforcement with data from tech devices? Creating laws and precedents to invade the privacy of individuals is dangerous to the safety of all of us. Who should decide when the RIGHT privacy should be waived for the "greater good?" The right to privacy and wellbeing is God given, and those natural rights come before any "Right to Know" where people live.

  14. I'd generally agree with except... once you ask for the public to finance you surrender your right to privacy because ... ta da, it's a public operation not a private one.
Want to hunt deer on your private property, go ahead hunt away, I don't care as long as you don't infringe on my rights to privacy and safety.

  15. 10:07, why don't you ask the PIO why they insist on Lebomag readers identifying themselves before submitting a comment to articles if privacy is a God given right?

  16. It's not like my neighbors are a mile away from me. We're not in the country. My child walks to and back to school. It is my duty as a parent to keep my child safe. Mount Lebanon has denied that.

  17. 11:17 AM, I would hear my previous neighbor sneezing in her house in the dead of winter with the windows closed. Our houses are ten feet apart. Nobody ever mentions population density in the comments. Both courts ruled out the harassment issue, but that is omitted from every news article. The big, brave anonymous trolls always like to bring up that I just want to protest on those properties. Has anyone protested on Shady Lane? Of course not. Has anyone protested in front of the commissioners' homes? Nope. Why can't people comprehend the fact that we want to stay the hell away from these deadly weapons?

  19. "Expenses rise to meet income" - from "THE LAW AND THE PROFITS - PARKINSON'S SECOND LAW" by British historian and economist C. Northcote Parkinson.

We elect pubic officials that hold a common economic mindset when it comes to tax money; that being money collected by the local government MUST be spent. An excess of revenue at the end of a fiscal year cannot be tolerated, and is almost an admission of failure in the eyes of those people. Returning money to the taxpayers, or even paying down debt, is usually not an option. Therefore, if excess funds are available it is inevitable that some expense will be found to absorb them.

Unfortunately, the majority of the voting public in our fair village seems to feel that spending tax money equates to status, and the more spent the higher the status. Living in a town that is constrained in tax revenue, and spends that revenue on quality roads and other infrastructure, is not as "attractive" as living in a town that throws money at parking apps, parties in New York City for selected officials, questionable deer control, entertainment facilities that serve a small fraction of the population, and other "look at me" projects.

I'm sure our elected officials and salaried bureaucrats are sincere people who feel they are doing the right things for the municipality (and are made of "finer clay"!) - however, I think they are sincerely misguided.

  20. 10:07, why do you think the PA Game Commission has rules regarding safety zones?
If we follow your logic regarding privacy, if you're out hunting out-of-season, with illegal weapons, without a license it's nobody's business because you're entitled to your God-given right to privacy.
But, I'll keep your God-given right to privacy in mind next time I put my garbage out. It'll be nobody's damn business if I chose to combine food scraps with my paper and plastic or not. Right?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hm.. Seems like people took my "God-given right of privacy" comment to think that I meant anyone should be able to do whatever they want... Nope! You still have to follow the law.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Exactly RG, but there are some that would quickly recommend you leave if you don't like the "look at me" projects.
There's one way to address the mentality, but it's going to take some unfidied effort.

  23. Correction... unified effort.
As in throwing out elected officials and then dealing with salaried bureaucrats.

  24. 12:03 why doesn't the municipality need to follow the hunting laws?

  25. The law is the law right!

"Pennsylvania landowners have total control of hunting on their properties. In addition, state law provides a "safety zone" restricting firearm hunting within 150 yards of occupied buildings, or 50 yards for archery hunting. But landowners can permit individuals to hunt within their safety zones."

    http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/outdoors/2013/12/01/State-s-hunting-law-takes-precedence-over-local-ordinances/stories/201312010069

I'm just wondering-- how many of those donated private properties have 50 yard for archery and 150 yard safety zones for firearms?

If I read the PG paragraph correctly, landowners have the right to forbid hunting in their safety zone.

The question is where do one landowners overlap the law and rights to protect their property.

  26. If ML does indeed have excess revenue, then let's start trimming all of those trees in the power lines and hiring more police officers to give out more speeding tickets! Maybe then, less deer/car accidents.

  27. What are the rules on luring the deer? There was a creepy man putting deer lure all over Twin HIlls Park today. He even put in on the surrounding streets every couple of houses on the curb. I think it is a long range attractant. It initially looks like a white powder but it really attaches to the surface. He also made x marks in the park with it and put it on the trees. He wasn't wearing any ID and he changes his name and where he lives every time someone talks to him. This is a sick place because Mt Lebanon endorses and pays for with taxpayer money this sort of behavior and consequential actions.

  28. 11:09 PM, no baiting is permitted to start until after archery season is over. DeNicola is not permitted to kill with guns in Twin Hills Park. This year.

Luring deer? That is a new one to me. Did you take any photos? Did you call the police?

11:09, thanks for the pics. I started a new thread, using your photos.
