PAYT is DEAD. Again.

Talk about recycling. PAYT was declared dead on April 30, 2015. See PAYT is DEAD. Then on May 27, 2015, I wrote that PAYT is being recycled again. Highlights from the commission meeting Fast forward to January 3, 2017 when Susan Morgans was going to make us feel good about solid waste and PAYT, now called SMART, in her memorandum to Manager Keith McGill. Desperately Seeking Susan UPDATED

Somehow I missed this news from the March 3, 2017 PG. Beverly Road may get more parking; pay-as-you-throw tossed in Mt. Lebanon
"After nearly an hour of debate Monday, commissioners decided not to further pursue a pay-as-you-throw garbage collection program, after analysis indicated that it could cost some residents more than the current system."
“Not one person has expressed an interest in pay-as-you-throw, but they are interested in weekly recycling,” Commissioner Stephen McLean said about the emails and calls he has received on the issue."
PAYT is DEAD. Again.

  1. Hi Elaine...I questioned Dave Brumfield about the cost of PAYT after I watched the video presented by Ian last week. You don't need much math to figure out that the cost per household would increase quite a bit compared to what we have now. Dave replied by saying "the absence of any appreciable savings is why the majority of the commission voted to reject PAYT as not cost effective at this time."

  3. As far as your request for roll call votes posted on the MTL website, check meeting minutes. Most motions are carried unanimously, but for those which aren't, names are listed in the meeting minutes.

  4. Thank you Elaine, for your comments on the roll call, but as you know, you have to keep a running tally of the votes yourself, to be able to easily access that information over time. Is this by design? Though it's in the meeting minutes, you have to download multitudes of PDF and figure it out. It's just a statement saying the data is there, it's up to you to find it. Frankly though, if not consolidated, it's not really useful. My hope is someday the municipality will do us the "favor" of consolidating that information into an easily searchable form, etc. (similar to state legislature). I know that day may not come, but it's definitely something that would help Lebo citizens to figure out what their commissioners have done and whether it's important to keep them there or vote in someone new. Sorry I stayed anonymous. I may in future decide to rewrite my other post. Best!

  5. Thank you for understanding, 3:33 PM. I did approve your latest comment because it is an excellent idea and hope that the day will come where MTL becomes transparent once again. The only person who consistently published his voting record was Dan Miller. I miss those days. In Kelly's first term, she updated her blog, but shortly before she ran for another term, her blog came to an immediate halt. In one of her last posts, she scolded constituents for not attending a budget meeting. She had plenty of opportunity to blog about PAYT, sterilization, etc.

I would be willing to post an opinion piece, 3:33 PM, if you change your mind.
