The high school newspaper is published monthly. To participate, students must be enrolled in the Journalism Production class (Journalism 1 is a prerequisite). Journalism production is a credited, scheduled course.
Mrs. Dawn Begor, sponsorI received an anonymous tip that Planned Parenthood is the largest sponsor of the high school newspaper, along with this statement.
Gold level is the highest level for a sponsor, with blue being second highest, and white being third highest. Personally, I find it to be very unethical for a school newspaper to be sponsored by such a controversial group.
I don't know how much a sponsorship costs now, but from August 16, 2008 Sponsoring the Devil's Advocate:
Blue-level sponsorships are $100 for the year, and gold-level sponsorships are $250. Sponsors will have their name or business name appear in every issue of the paper and receive a copy of each issue.
Planned Parenthood? Does that mean kids in Lebo land are doing the nasty? For shame.
ReplyDeleteAnd $250? I'll write a check right now if you want to put Lebo Citizens in there!
Wow, 9:30 AM! That is very generous of you! It would send a good message to the students.

Bet the administration comes up with some excuse to not allow it.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't that be a nice lucrative lawsuit...
ReplyDelete9:30, that you think Planned Parenthood only deals with issues relating to sex shows you have no understanding of the organization. For shame, indeed.
ReplyDeleteYah, its for the flu shots 9:30. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/get-care/our-services For shame 9:30.
ReplyDelete6:17 Spare me the platitudes. I am fully aware of what that organization is and what it does. It's vile and corrupt, just like the people who support it.
ReplyDeleteThe fact the school district thinks it is an appropriate sponsor for anything education-related underscores the need for change.
8:12 PM - You know nothing. Planned Parenthood offers vital health services. But thanks for inspiring me for making a significant donation tonight in your honor. Every time you make an unfounded, nasty criticism, I'll throw in another heft donation. Keep 'em coming - I need the end of year tax deductions.
ReplyDeleteYeah, bet you do 8:46. Don’t suppose you’d like to show those cancelled checks.
ReplyDeleteBy the way 8:46, like it or not we all contribute to Planned Parenthood through taxes. Apparently, just like the Capital Campaign where $923,000 of district funds (from taxes) were deposited/loaned/invested and are being spent with little oversight or accountability.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you should meet with Sloane Astorino, 8:46 PM. I bet she could help you with those end of year tax deductions. Go easy on 8:12 PM. "Planned Parenthood" sounds like something that might have to do with, I don't know, maybe planned pregnancies or even unplanned pregnancies. The name is misleading. They should change their name to Vital Health Services or something more in line with their services. It's false advertising!
ReplyDeleteI looked up their website. The closest one is in Bridgeville, I believe. Aren't there any vital health services located closer to the high school? Not easily accessible to Mt. Lebanon High School students.
Or how about this? Why is there a need to sponsor the high school newspaper when we have school board (former and present) directors dispersing $20,000 for a sports hall of fame. Even if the Devil's Advocate gold level sponsorship is now $500, that is nothing in the scheme of things.
I think the bigger question is why aren't these students on CHIP? They could get vital health services right here in Mt. Lebanon, instead of relying on the gold level sponsor for the high school newspaper for their "vital health services."
Elaine
Devil's Advocate living up to its name. Horribly sad.
ReplyDeleteThis is much ado about nothing. The way some of you talk about PP, one might conclude that they are peddling cigarettes. It is a stand up health care organization for men, women, teenagers. FYI---abortion is only 3% of it's yearly services. Be glad that the school district does not fund the school paper. Then, it would be like a state run newspaper. It's admirable that the Devil's Advocate does its own fundraising and is independent from the high school.
ReplyDelete9:17 - I’d be happy to show you the credit card receipts! In fact, I just made another donation for good measure. I’m not going to be easy on someone who calls PP (and supporters) vile and corrupt. We’re all adults...do a little research and you’d know what they do. I’m happy my tax dollars are supporting it. It’s a good use of money. And I’m happy they’re advertising in the school paper. Most school papers solicit donations to keep the paper running. I’m glad at least the kids are smart enough to understand that PP is a perfectly respectable sponsor.
ReplyDeleteYeah, killing half a million babies a year? Meh, no biggie. In other countries, that's called genocide. Here, liberals call that "progress".
ReplyDeleteThanks for making my point, 1210. PP and its nutty followers are dishonest. This is the same group that swore it didn't take federal funding (it did). This is the same group that said it doesn't sell body parts from the children it kills (it does). And it is the same bunch of lunatics who denied trying to do an end-run around parents by providing birth control to girls as young as 10 (they did).
I love they're portrayed as just some wholesome organization that juat wants to help. Ha! They are a fringe activist group and conatantly support only one political party. So please stop portraying them as a benign "health services" group.

It’s more than ado about nothing, 12:10.
ReplyDeleteAccording to FactCheck.org: “The Planned Parenthood Action Fund PAC, which is registered with the Federal Election Commission, contributed about $694,000 to congressional candidates in the 2016 cycle, and 98 percent of that went to Democratic candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks federal campaign contributions.”
I see absolutely nothing wrong with PP sponsoring the school newspaper. I used to run a high school newspaper - good for them for getting sponsorship.
ReplyDeleteWhat's far more important is this: Why do the taxpayers need to support the obsession of a sub-group of adults in this community's for sports for their own kids? Perhaps PP can fund the next turf project? Or perhaps the Capital Campaign can ask PP to get them out of the hole?
12:10 AM. "FYI---abortion is only 3% of it's yearly services. "
ReplyDeleteWhat percentage of the Nazi Party's work was constituted by the holocaust? If it was 3%, would you support their other policies? For those of us who believe a child in the womb is a chid and worth protecting, no matter what PP does, it is an evil organization.
6:09 AM, I would be happy to see your credit card receipts. But unfortunately, you remain anonymous. Talk is cheap.

8:12 AM:
ReplyDeleteReasonable people may differ. If you think PP is evil, stay away from it. In the US, abortion is constitutionally protected under privacy rights. I don't think that the Nazis killing Jews was ever deemed to be legal.
