At the 01:09 timestamp, Kelly Fraasch made her case and pressed on for a public hearing and commission vote for commission stipend increase. She mentioned that she brought this up on a local blog (not this one) and gained support for this issue. She feels that by raising the stipend, it would invite more diversity and encourage single moms and economically challenged residents to run.
Just an FYI, I ran as a single mom who, at the time, had NO income. I had a low budget campaign too. I also interviewed for Kristen Linfante's vacant seat a few years later, and not once considered the stipend as a game changer. I also run this blog at no cost to taxpayers, which is my choice.
Steve Silverman tried to move on to the next agenda topics, which were time sensitive, but Kelly insisted that the issue of commission compensation be brought to a vote at the next commission meeting. What a waste of time.
My employer laughed when I asked for an increase to cover my child care expenses ! I can't afford it but I have to work !
ReplyDeleteRemember when you used to LOVE Kelly?
ReplyDeleteThat's just dumb. Increase the pay for commissioners so as not to economically disadvantage single mothers or the disabled? WTF? She left out one-armed tuba players and blind pastry chefs.
ReplyDeleteHow many single mothers in Lebo would...well...ok, how many single mothers ARE in Lebo? And how many are beating a path to a seat on the commission? If they want to run for office, they'll face the same obstacles as everyone else including the time involved.
Kelly needs to step back and take a hard look at why she's in office. If one is persuaded or dissuaded regarding "public service" by a financial component, that person is doing it for the wrong reasons. If it's such a burden and you need to make more money, go get a second job. That's what grownups do. Elected office should never be viewed as an income generator.
Elaine, you kick ass.
How many single moms have the time Kelly?
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Kelly, if it were part of a larger picture move: Reduce the salaries and authority of the municipal staff, and increase the stipend and authority of those actually elected by the people. Then, we've got a plan.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh what is she talking about with the single moms comment? What about single dads? I mean heck I’d like to see more women represented everywhere (umm police force??) but something strikes me as odd.
ReplyDeleteDo you ever have those days where all the news feels like a joke? #kellyluringsinglemomstocommissionwithstipend
ReplyDeleteI am grateful for her service though!
Ms. Fraasch is perpetuating a stereotype. That single moms are economically disadvantaged. I am a successful single mom who is irritated with Ms. Fraasch. She sees herself to be a modern, liberated woman, superior to other single moms.
ReplyDeleteHow much longer do we have to deal with Kelly on the commission?
ReplyDelete7:04 AM, Wards 2 and 4 were last November, so Wards 1,3, and 5 will be up in less than two years.
