We're fifty weeks away from the end of Timmy's contract. That also means that his 6% increase kicked in on July 1, 2018. In addition, his tax deferred supplement jumps up to 4% of his base salary. Throw in his bonuses that he has received.
And what do we get for this?
- Years of deception with the Century of Excellence Capital Campaign.
- Missing reports Latest Capital Campaign Summary, School Board Reports.
- Attitude toward parents at school board meetings about the Gifted Program and the Capital Campaign
- Superintendent Goals approved half way through the school year. 2017-2018 Goals were approved in January 2018.
I hope the School Board takes this into consideration when negotiating the new Superintendent Contract.
He has very few fans among the parents of special needs children.

ReplyDeleteMT Lebanon schools are falling behind Peters and Quaker Valley. The school board is full of uninteresting thinkers when it comes to schooling ingenuity. SAT scores are lower as well as college placement. Students need a curriculum in critical thinking, hands on craft work, computer science, language, civics, entrepreneurial skills, along with the math, reading, history, and writing. As a college professor I can tell you the students I see coming out of a myriad of PA schools are very behind on "important" skills. Ask a student a critical question, i.e, what is the US economy, why is the sky blue, what is Newton's third law of physics, what is the capital of Spain, how does a car engine work, how does a t.v. work, how can you turn 5$ into 100$, how does your I-phone work, and name a liberty in the Bill of Rights and most students cannot answer such questions,
ReplyDeleteA six percent pay raise in this new economic climate is obscene particularly given all the funding challenges faced by public education. Something is REALLY wrong with this District. They are completely out of touch.

I couldn't find the current Superintendent contract. The amendment refers to section 3 which presumably is about how and to what (annual goals minimally?) the increases are tied?

I have heard rumblings of stagnant or declining academic performance for several years yet no efforts to addresss the problems ever seem to materialize.
ReplyDeleteReading the contract it says the superintendent shall be assessed against performance criteria one of which in the 2013 co tract was to maintain or improve student achievement. That was eventually replaced with other goals in subsequent years as listed on the disydist website. It seems the 2017-18 goals still refer back to student growth and achievment as a category, but I didn't think any of the goals this past year actually had measurable outcomes and metrics for improving or maintaining growth and achievement.
ReplyDeleteHence the stagnation. The Board lets the guy dream up miscellaneous nonsense or embrace the latest fad. Its the road to nowhere and that is where the District finds itself. Listen to the teachers! They will show us the way out of this quagmire.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with academic achievement can’t all be attributed to Tim — he has influence but not entirely. My impression is that the competitive “we are the best” attitude undermines the humility needed for both educators and residences to seek methods for engaging the students at a higher level. Some kids are engaged but a lot flatline due to a lack of interest combined with an attitude of good enough.

Are the teachers quietly whispering we can't teach to all the kids levels in a classroom. We can teach to the middle, someone else will take care of the bottom, but the top will be fine if they're not challenged because it's still a good education at baseline?
ReplyDelete7:20, is that why the kids don't learn logarithms until 10th grade? Teachers only teach what is required by state standards, and kids don't want to learn from other sources because it is not required in school.
ReplyDeleteI know many D.Ed folks and they argue students need be left alone in order to learn efficiently. So for example abolish tests because of testing anxiety, or let the student take the test home or multiple times. Also, teachers must use a myriad of methods in the classroom to effectively teach the different ways students learn. Most liberal teachers do not believe in the bell curve rather think everyone has the cognitive abilities of Einstein, and just need to be taught correctly to unleash their genius. There are no standards in college anymore, ratherfluff passes as competency.
ReplyDeleteActually, financially rewarding college degrees have never been more challenging to obtain. Sadly, many Mt Lebanon students are largely unprepared to gain acceptance and succeed in such majors. Consequently, they will washout or graduate with worthless degrees and buried alive in student loan debt. Or bankrupt their beleaguered parents who, ironically, paid a fortune in school taxes only to end up with children largely unprepared for college.
ReplyDelete8:54PM is correct and there will be serious implications. The next generation of Mt. Lebanon residents will earn LESS than the current residents. They willl earn less, have fewer employer sponsored health and retirement benefits and work longer hours. And have less money to pay real estate taxes.
