Dears for Deer

Many kids are upset by this plan to kill deer in Mt. Lebanon. I believe they should be heard as well. I am willing to post their artwork or letters, with parents' permission, of course. I would rather not have their names associated with their artwork.

I received the following from a very upset parent.

I saw a post earlier this evening pertaining to Lebo kids who are not involved....well here is my response....

This is a picture of my nine year old who wore her sticker from the protest when she went to school the day following the commissioner's meeting a few weeks ago. She told me that when she went into school wearing that sticker on her hat that a group of kids gathered around her and they started chanting "NO TO DEER KILLING!"...Yes, A group of fourth-graders! Both she and my 11-year-old ask me every morning when they wake up if I know if any more deer have been murdered. We were all thrilled this morning as we saw deer prints in the mud in our backyard and I saw one of our neighborhood deer running across the street as I walked out dog!

Favorite poem:
Four Deer by Eamon Grennan

Four deer lift up their lovely heads to me
In the dusk of the golf course I plod across
Toward home. They're browsing the wet grass
The snow has left and, statued, stare at me
In deep silence and I see whatever light there is
Gather to glossy pools in their eight mild,
Barely curious but wary eyes. When one at a time
They bend again to feed, I can hear the crisp
Moist crunch of the surviving grass between
Their teeth, imagine the slow lick of a tongue
Over whickering lips. They've come from the unlit
Winter corners of their fright to find
A fresh season, this early gift, and stand
Almost easy at the edge of white snow islands
And lap the gray-green sweet depleted grass. About them
Hangs an air of such domestic sense, the comfortable
Hush of folk at home with one another, a familiar
Something I sense in spit of the great gulf of strangeness
We must look over at each other. Tails flicker
White in thickening dusk and I feel their relief
At the touch of cold snow underfoot while their faces
Nuzzle grass, as if, like birds, they had crossed
Unspeakable vacant wastes with nothing but hunger
Shaping their brains and driving them from leaf to
Dry leaf, sour strips of bark- under a thunder of guns
And into the cold comfort of early dark. I've seen
Their straight despairing lines cloven in snowfields
After storm, an Indian file of famished natives, poor
Unprayed-for wanderers through blinding chill, seasoned
Castaways in search of home ports, which they've found
At last here on the winter's edge between our houses and
Their trees. All of a sudden, I've come too close. Like
Birds they move as one mind, springing in silent waves
Over the grass, then cracking snow with sharp hard
Snaps, lightfooting it into the sanctuary of a pine grove
Where they stand looking back at me, a deer-shaped family
Of shadows against the darker arch of trees and this
Rusting dusk. When silence settles over us again and
They bow down to browse, the sound of grass being lipped,
Bitten, meets me across the space between us. Close
Enough for comfort, they see we keep, instinctively, our
Distance, sharing this air where a few last shards of day-
Light glitter in little meltpools or spread a skin of
Brightness on the ice, the ice stiffening towards midnight
under the clean magnesium burn of a first star.

  1. Thank you for posting this. I just spent 15 minutes searching social media looking for some outcry from the older kids. Nothing. Nada.

I reached back out to friends in Lebo. They asked their kids. Nada.

I agree with the commenter that the kids learn compliance. I think of my kids time there: lining up on the blacktop before school....NO playing allowed. Can't ride bikes or scooters to school. The quiet lunchroom. Seriously?

Pleasee keep posting pics of kids. Lebo and the ugliness that exists inside the schools squashes the masses and trains them to be silent. Give them a voice. Teach them that it is good to be heard!

  2. OMG, parent!
You actually went outside to walk the dog and survived?
Don't you realize their are herds of maneating deer out there ready to pounce on unsuspected residents.
They'll maul your dog, then proceed to stomp you into the ground, poop on you then turn their attention to your SUV.
My God, thankfully you survived. The next time you go out it may be your last time, the deer are propagating like rabbits. Well, not like rabbits, but some people say there sure is a lot of them.

  3. 11:06. Sadly, I was not so lucky. I was mugged this evening in my own yard by a gang of deer. The buck was on my back deck, looking in my window. OMG! I went out to talk with them and they took my cell phone and wallet. I told them this would give them a bad reputation, but they didn't care. The younger one said she needed a cell phone to tweet her friends about what is happening in her hometown. The others demanded to know where I kept my Hostas! Lock your doors, pull your curtains, and STAY INSIDE!

Joking aside - such a wonderful painting, photo, and poem.

Just last night, there was activity in the Christ Science Church parking lot. The police are threatening US with harassment charges and trespassing, as they did last night.

The people around the golf course are calling the police on anyone who visits in that area, saying that there are too many deer. One resident in Brumfield's ward was out with his daughter yesterday afternoon and pulled up to the area, only to have a police car pull up and block his car in.

We are being harassed by the police. All they ever say is that they are doing their job. Seriously? Guarding killing traps?

  10. I thought that I read a few days ago on this blog that Christ Science said that Benner is not permitted in their parking lot. If that is the case then maybe they need to give "us" their blessing to be in the parking lot? Is that possible to get? Maybe they could type up a letter and we could get copies made to hand to the cops when they harass???
Also, I thought that the only places that we are banned are within the no trespassing signs?
And most importantly, wher are the updates? Is there nothing to update?
Hey Benner! Just in case you are reading this....You are an ass!! Just my humble opinion of course.

  11. That is correct, 9:11 AM. Christ Science said no deal.

Here are some updates. Unknown about last night's count, but it was confirmed that NO deer were killed the previous night. Not including last night, the total stands at 3 deer killed.

Yes, people are being harassed for standing by the warning signs, not the No Trespassing signs. People are being asked for drivers' licenses and phone numbers.

If this is happening to you, please email me privately. I will give you the phone number of the person to speak with at the ACLU. They are standing by and are fully aware of the situation in Mt. Lebanon.

  12. I wanted to recommend a book to parents:

"The Emotional Lives of Animals & Children: Insights from a Farm Sanctuary" by William Crain.

Bill Crain is a developmental psychologist who effectively created a non-profit organization aimed to protect deer from slaughter in New York. His successful efforts have been documented recently in the NYTimes.

His book describes both the similarities between children and animals and how we, as a society, promote detachment from animals. Children learn this detachment by witnessing situations like Mt Lebanon's animal slaughter, which if presented to mental health professionals would be universally deemed abhorrent.

  14. Can you post the ACLU number? I'd like to know how they view children being banished from their right to use public parks due to their anticipated exposure to animal cruelty.

Children can still use tennis courts, soccer fields, and playgrounds but what happened to their natural environment? Who decides when and where children are permitted to go in Mt Lebanon?

  15. If the pro-kill people were serious about feeding the homeless they'd have the PIO hold an event like this and eat the deer themselves since they find it to be so appetizing.
Then send the proceeds to the soup kitchens so they can buy the things they really need.
The Gardeners though won't admit they wouldn't eat the deer meat themselves. Maybe they could add squirrel to the menu to satisfy you know who.

I would imagine they would be more than willing to offer advice on this. Maybe even stop out during the night to see for themselves. Maybe ride along.

They derive quite a bit of their funding from lawsuits.

Pittsburgh just landed on a DOJ list of six cities for police interaction with the community

    http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2015/03/12/pittsburgh-among-6-cities-chosen-for-project-on-curbing-racial-bias/

As Mt. Lebanon is one of the least diverse communities in Allegheny County, the ACLU might consider them a useful reference benchmark vs. the City of Pittsburgh.

Can almost read it now, "meanwhile, just minutes away, in a community where people are more worried about deer eating their roses than being shot on their porch..."

Hot-button issue. Lots of attention. Lots of press. Don't like it? THEN LEAVE OUR DEER ALONE.

  17. Now police are harassing people and asking for ID and phone numbers... what the f*ck is this goddamn Russia?
What is next, we'll have to purchase monthly travel permits if we want to move about in the bubble?

  18. Honestly, reading the letter to the editor and reading other people who are not typically involved say how inhumane they think this is makes me feel better.

Just talked to two hunters at my desk who are besides themselves that the PA Game Commission allows this.

    One other point.

I see two sides shaping up. Most people who comment on the articles like the letter to the editor who side with the cull are unaware that there are other ways to do this that don't include killing all the deer. They just need to know about the new methods such as spaying the Does. The other people are those who are against this because they recognize how inhumane it all is. Trapping deer in a corral with corn bait and using an AR-15 to kill them is crazy to most people.

  19. I am a Mt.Lebo resident and an ACLU member. Last week, Sara Rose, the sr. staff atty. in Pittsburgh, and I had a very long talk about the Mt. Lebo police state. The local chapter is aware.
Keep in mind that the ACLU is not an animal rights organization. However, we do our best to protect the constitutional rights of people.
Call the ACLU if you are stopped by the police in connection with this deer kill. The cops aren't going to be using their jacks over anyone's head. But, a pattern has emerged among the corn police to intimidate and harass people who are legally on public property or driving their cars while obeying traffic laws.
The ACLU is not going to ride the corral circuit at night. They don't need to. I will be in touch again today. Thank you.

  21. Thank you 10:22 for the heads up. I'm not a lawyer but found this advice below which seems reasonable.
My question is why do the police need your phonne number especially if you are an adult? What are they going to do... call your mother? Monitor your phone calls? Give your number to the Gardners so they can harass you with late night calls?

Regarding being asked to provide ID to the corn police.

    "“What are you doing?”
Police aren’t celebrities, so they’re not always used to being photographed in public. So even if you’re recording at a safe distance, they might approach and ask what you are doing. Avoid saying things like “I’m recording you to make sure you’re doing your job right” or “I don’t trust you.”

Instead, say something like “Officer, I’m not interfering. I’m asserting my First Amendment rights. You’re being documented and recorded offsite.”

Saying this while remaining calm and cool will likely put police on their best behavior. They might follow up by asking, “Who do you work for?” You may, for example, tell them you’re an independent filmmaker or a citizen journalist with a popular website/blog/YouTube show. Whatever you say, don’t lie—but don’t let police trick you into thinking that the First Amendment only applies to mainstream media journalists. It doesn’t.

    “Let me see your ID.”

In the United States there’s no law requiring you to carry a government ID. But in 24 states police may require you to identify yourself if they have reasonable suspicion that you’re involved in criminal activity.

But how can you tell if an officer asking for ID has reasonable suspicion? Police need reasonable suspicion to detain you, so one way to tell if they have reasonable suspicion is to determine if you’re free to go. You can do this by saying “Officer, are you detaining me, or am I free to go?”

If the officer says you’re free to go or you’re not being detained, it’s your choice whether to stay or go. But if you’re detained, you might say something like, “I’m not required to show you ID, but my name is [your full name].” It’s up to you if you want to provide your address and date of birth if asked for it, but I’d stop short of giving them your Social Security number."

This whole thing is blowing up into something much larger than controlling deer and it isn't going to be pretty. I can't imagine the negative publicity for the municipality if they start clogging up the district court with deer watchers.

  30. Great idea!! Put apples and peanut butter all around parks on walks during the day so the deer will not be hungry at night. Let Benners men spend their time running around at night picking up apples and peanut butter to try to get the deer to their death traps. Yippe only 4 deer lost. That is unless they are lying which I believe could be the case.

  31. Vic Walczak, ACLU's Legal Director in PA, is one of the top trial lawyers in PA or for that matter in the country, and he's local. I think he lives in the south hills.

We need to document and video tape all Mt. Lebanon police intimidation and harassment.

WITOLD "VIC" WALCZAK - ACLU Legal Director

Witold "Vic" Walczak, the son of a Polish Holocaust survivor, came to the United States at age three. He graduated from Colgate University and Boston College Law School. Before attending law school Vic traveled to martial-law Poland, where he experienced the deprivation of civil liberties, including police brutality, wiretapping and a strip search. Vic joined the ACLU in 1992, after five years of prisoners’ rights work at Maryland’s Legal Aid Bureau. He served for twelve years as the Pittsburgh Chapter’s executive director. In 2004 he became the ACLU of Pennsylvania’s legal director. Besides specializing in free-speech and religious-liberty cases, Vic has handled nationally significant cases involving challenges to widespread police misconduct, substandard public-defender services, and the Secret Service’s use of “protest zones” to shield President Bush from demonstrators. In 2005, Vic was one of three lawyers who successfully tried Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, the first case challenging the teaching in public schools of “intelligent design” (ID), which the ACLU claimed was creationism repackaged. Most recently, Vic was co-lead counsel in a precedent-setting case challenging an anti-illegal-immigrant ordinance in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, the first of its kind in the nation. Vic has received many honors, including the 2003 Federal Lawyer of the Year award from the Federal Bar Association’s Western Pennsylvania Chapter. (Pittsburgh)

  33. The bigger question is why are the police involved in this at all? They're advertising for more police officers ($40 application fee), but spending most of their time pissing around by the corn feeders, neglecting the town's true danger: careless, inattentive, aggressive, latte-wielding drivers who don't let anything stop them on their way to a pillbox hat sale at the Galleria. So when this cull is over, the Corn Guard will return to piddling around the police station, tinkering with their surplus military toys, while the true danger continues unabated. And they want to add more officers to do what exactly? First item on the agenda: ensure Bendel is not re-elected. Second item? Termination of Chief Coleman McDonough.

Just talking with someone randomly --not about my Lebo or deer --and she tells me a 22 year old from the area lost an eye when a bullet ricocheted off ice (?) and came back to hit him very recently. I was mortified given how I've been trying to deny the thought of something going wrong with these "contractors" shooting corralled deer in our parks.

Has anyone requested being allowed to video tape the shooting of the deer in the corrals?

Does anyone know a local humane officer that could request video taping the shooting of the deer?

It's important to get a video tape now for evaluation by humane experts vs. after the entire slaughter is complete.

Are the current corral cameras running when the deer are being shot? If so, do we have legal rights as Mt. Lebanon residents to request copies of these videos right now and/or later?

I guess Benner thinks Jesus would approve of inhumane slaughter and animal cruelty. Killing deer with JESUS - praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

There is now ample scientific evidence in peer reviewed journals that all mammals experience stress, terror, shock, anxiety, fear, trauma, foreboding, as well as physical pain. Given this knowledge, it is simply illogical not to extend the same basic protection against the deliberate infliction of suffering to animals, which we ourselves enjoy. ... The deliberate infliction of suffering on ‘lesser creatures’ who are wholly in our power, and who are, strictly speaking, morally innocent is a gross betrayal of our God-given responsibilities." – Revd Professor Andrew Linzey

    MISSED, RICHOCHET, OR MISFIRED SHOTS

Below is a perfect example of what can go wrong. The ariticle below in which the police "marksman" taking part in the town's bait and shoot program to control deer -- fired the round aiming down at the deer from a raised platform and was several hundred yards away in the woods, when the bullet struck something and ricocheted and blew a baseball size hole in the home of a couple with a little boy, who were all home at the time.

OFFICER'S ERRANT SHOT AT DEER UPSETS RESIDENTS

    The Buffalo News (Buffalo, NY)

Byline: Thomas J. Dolan - NEWS NORTHTOWNS BUREAU

Three days after an errant shot fired from a nearby woods struck their home, a young Amherst couple are still shaken by the thought of what could have happened.

Amherst police say that one of their officers -- a marksman who is taking part in the town's bait and shoot program to control deer -- fired the round and that the shot ricocheted before hitting the house.

But that's not good enough for residents of San Fernando Lane, where the bullet landed in the second-floor guest room of a young family's home.

"In my opinion they should not have been anywhere this close to a house," said a woman who lives in the house struck by the bullet. She agreed to an interview Monday on the condition that her name and address not be published.

"When it happens, your instinctive reaction is to be outraged. We felt that at the time and still do," she said.

At about 10:30 a.m. Friday, her husband was working in a first-floor room of the house and the couple's son was staying home from grade school because of illness, she said.

The bullet blew a baseball size hole in their upstairs guest room window and lodged in a picture on the wall.

Amherst police came to the house, and they were "extremely cooperative and extremely sensitive and sympathetic" about the incident, she said, but she added that nobody should be shooting a weapon that close to a house.

Police told her the officer involved was several hundred yards away in the woods, aiming down at a deer from a platform when the round struck something and was diverted toward the houses on San Fernando Lane.

Over the weekend, her husband took a walk into the woods and said it was "not that far." "If there's a chance of a fluke, they shouldn't be there," the woman said.

According to the town's online map system, the woods are located between Casey and North French roads, covering an area about 1,000 yards long and about 600 yards wide at the midpoint. The map also shows there are houses on three sides of the woods, the nearest of which are located about 300 yards or less from the center of the woods.

According to the woman, her neighbors are aware of the incident and they are "very interested in what's happening." As for her son, she said, it has been "difficult to explain" to him what happened.

Assistant Police Chief Ronald H. Hagleberger told Town Board members Monday that the bait and shoot program will remain suspended until the department concludes its noncriminal investigation of the incident in about three weeks.

Police were withholding the names of the officer who fired the round and the owners of the home that was struck.

"I don't want to have this unfortunate incident stop the program," Amherst Council Member William L. Kindel said, calling the incident "one in a million."

But Council Member Daniel J. Ward disagreed, saying the bait and shoot program is "an accident waiting to happen," because Amherst is not a rural community.

Program officials said they would continue nonlethal attempts to control deer herds during the suspension period.

Also remember the newborn baby that was shot by a stray hunter's bullet.

    http://mtlebanon.org/DocumentCenter/Home/View/8889

In larger lettering one of the #dreadfuldeer comments is this:

"In many Pennsylvania communities, the healthful pleasures of gardening, children's outdoor play, and even casual walking represent risks people are no longer willing to take".

The authors blame Lyme's Disease on deer and foster #fearmongering by suggesting citizens can no longer enjoy the outdoors due to ticks, which they suggest are here due to deer.

Please help with accumulating this information which can also include quotes from residents regarding the risks associated with seeing deer, knowing deer are in the neighborhood, and keeping children inside due to deer.

    Thank you.

Marilyn Narey, quite contrary How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and shotgun shells,
And dead innocent deer all in a row.

  45. Not sure if someone has already put this out there yet, but:

How can they only keer 3 deer or 1 deer at a time??? I thought the gate was only supposed to close with a minimum of 4 (or 6) deer trapped inside.

Did some get away? Or are they breaking the permit AGAIN???

  47. Jason M, first they sold the public on deer counts they can't backup with concrete evidence.
Then Benner lied when he said they'd wait for a group of deer to get into the corral before closing the gate.
It's all a big scam to satisfy a group of self-indulgent, spoiled, narcissists.

  48. I stand by original comment. 1700 high schoolers. 1250 middle schoolers (many of whom are on social media). And there is only one student that has gone public against the cull? What a bunch of pathetic PK wanna bes. The elementary schools in Lebo really teach the kids not to speak up. In particular I recall the really nasty guidance counselor at Markham giving those stupid "think about it" forms for kids that expressed their voice...if even to their parents. (When kids were asked to fill out a bullying survey she read the answers and made the kids change them if they said there was any bullying going on in the school.)

Sad. Sad. Sad. At least their parents can rest assured that they will return to Lebo, try to live on the same street, and continue the wretched culture.

  49. 12:02 What do you want the kids to do? Do you want them to stage a march? Write letters? Speak at commission meetings? These are kids who aren't allowed to take off their coats at recess in 50 degree weather. These are kids whose principals punish them, charge them with "crimes" and then sanitize their school records so that nothing is sent to the state, as mandated by state law. There are horrible people in charge of Mt Lebanon right now and blaming the kids for all of this is BS. Why don't you rise to the occasion, sign your name and show us your letter to the newspaper, the ACLU, and the state?

  50. I wouldn't put particular pressure on kids. Adults (at least chronologically speaking) created this mess, and other adults are trying to shed a little light to avoid recurrence.

I would expect that more than a few are bewildered by the whole thing. Those whose parents are pushing the killing have my deepest sympathy. Nobody deserves to be raised by people who get off on killing deer over flowers. No wonder so many kids turn to drugs with dysfunctional parents these days. Sad all the way around.
