Members of the community, as well as a board member have called for an outside audit. At 18:10 time stamp October 17, 2017 school board meeting video, Mary Birks quotes John Irving.
“Don't forget this, too: Rumors aren't interested in the unsensational story; rumors don't care what's true.”
But at 24:19 of the October 17, 2017 school board meeting video, Mary reported,
Harassment and defamation of character have no place with our professional staff and will not go unanswered. Here's the thing, Mary. It isn't harassment and defamation of character if the financials are constantly changing. There is also the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. You said it yourself that there were over 40 Right To Knows filed since September. Do you know why so many RTKs were filed? Watch yourself in action at the 40:22 time stamp. A resident asked questions and you were not going to do a back and forth with him.
Birks didn't stop there. Watch how she deals with the same resident mentioned above at the 56:26 time stamp. We were told that Jo Posti was going to make a presentation on the Capital Campaign "reset." Nick asked if we were going to see the presentation. All Birks said was, "Nope." What a nasty woman!
Mary, the last commenter was absolutely correct. At 1:02:25, we have the right to express our opinions and we are very upset with how we, the public, are being treated at these meetings.
So before you send your lawyers here to shut me down, let me just say that you are doing nothing to garner votes. Your attitude sucks. Having a Candidates Forum with just your slate present is despicable. How you preside at a meeting is unbelievable. Remember, Karma is a bitch.
Update October 18, 2017 9:02 AM Watch School Board Director Hugh Beal's reaction after Mary Birks shut down Mt. Lebanon resident, Nick Meduho. Also, please read what Mike Riemer, Stephen Strotmeyer, and Aviva Diamond say about community participation.

US Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren said: “education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments.” Pennsylvania’s system of more than 500 locally-elected school boards epitomizes participatory government. In Mt. Lebanon, our residents elect the board of school directors empowered to decide on educational and financial matters with community needs, values, and expectations in mind. Community participation in that decision-making process should be encouraged. School directors are reflective of our constituency, and the ability to engage in open discussion with residents is critical to effective, accountable, transparent and ethical public school governance. Our residents should be made to feel welcome at all public meetings, whether as observers or participants. Future encouragement of residents to express personal viewpoints, whether in agreement or opposition to the school board needs to be cultivated and facilitated.
Ultimately, as voters, you have the opportunity to indicate your support for candidates that value a variety of views within Mt. Lebanon.
This November 7th, if you value representative democracy at the most grassroots level, please vote for Mike Riemer (in both the 4-year & 2-year seats), Stephen Strotmeyer, and Aviva Diamond. Our slate will work to restore a willingness to engage in civil discussions with our community as they pertain to our educational framework.
It would be interesting to see the financial record for each year to see a history.
ReplyDeleteRight now we’re seeing a cumulative financial statement that includes all years from 2013 thru FY 6/30/2016.
Shouldn’t there be a fianancial statement for 2013 alone, then one showing one for 2013 and 2014 and then one for ‘13,’14, and 2015.
Which should by all rights match one of the statements issued over the past three months.
Couldn’t this all be put to rest by doing the outside audit that Director Riemer suggested?
ReplyDeleteWe have three different financial statements issued for the same time period showing different amounts.
That’s odd to say the least. Could be overlooked funds, typos or whatever, but it doesn’t instill confidence in the fundraiser and isn’t that a prerequisite for a successful campaign.
The best way to silence critics is simply to prove them wrong beyond a doubt IMO.
Retaliation against whistleblowers is not new, Elaine. Sorry to say.
ReplyDeleteWho approves the funds for the capital campaign anyway?
ReplyDelete“We were told that Jo Posti was going to make a presentation on the Capital Campaign "reset." Nick asked if we were going to see the presentation. All Birks said was, "Nope." “
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean they are going back to the quiet phase again.
Are you saying that because I filed a complaint with the PA Ethics Commission, that Mary is retaliating? That's interesting. I wonder what the PA Ethics Commission has to say about that.
ReplyDeleteGood one, 8:00 PM. They have "reset" back to the Quiet Phase again.
Elaine
A director publicly admits they voted to approve school district spending even though they didn’t know what the money was going for (some to an entity that the director works for) is threatening lawsuits. Really!
ReplyDeleteWhen the minutes were amended and then approved, Mary Birks pointed out to the visiting students from Foster Elementary that this is democracy in action. After they left, Mary Birks demonstrated how a totalitarian government works. Shame on you, Mary. Shame on you.
ReplyDeleteElaine
To President Birks- (apparently you pay attention this blog since you’re threatening lawsuits)
ReplyDeleteDo you comprehend why taxpayers are questioning the campaign, it’s finances and the public statements?
We have three different financial statements for the same time frame. We have different stories from campaign officers, at different times and none match.
Taxpayers have a right to question the validity of all of it.
These is simple relief from all the rumors, get an outside audit and put it all to rest.
Read the items below please.
“So far, Mt. Lebanon’s capital campaign has raised about $1.1 million in pledges, gifts, goods and services, according to Maggie Schmidt, the district’s campaign counsel and veteran of dozens of such efforts on behalf of nonprofit organizations.” — The Almanac, 8/21/15
“Jan Klein, district business director, told the board that the campaign began with $923,000 in startup money from the district that is to be paid back. Since 2013, the fund has raised $623,000 in cash and another $340,000 in pledges — about one-sixth of the goal.
The campaign disbursed $310,000 for projects and programs and spent $734,000 in administration costs, including one full-time staff member who was reduced to part time this summer, Ms. Klein said. The fund has a balance of about $910,000 now, she said.” — PG 9/15/17
Financial Statement released 9/30/17:
Donations: $639,512.98
Pledges: $324,618.93
Expenses: $693,001.93
Disbursements: $333,574.48
So in 2015 Maggie Schmidt claims $1.1 million was raised. Jan Klein in 9/15/17 claims only $963,000 has been raised and the latest of three financial reports the claim is $1,018,131.91.
The other two statements claimed revenue was:
7/31/17 - $929,040.33
8/31/17 - $966,573.68
These three amounts are all for the same time period!
Note also in the 7/31/17 report it claims MLCF pledged $30,166 since 2015.
The 8/31/17 and 9/31/17 reports claim they pledged $25,000 since 2015.
Did they unpledge $5,000? If they did this is a prime example why pledges can’t be claimed as revenue.
Through all this the reports declare that it cost X amount of dollars to run the campaign.
According to the statements:
7/31/17 - $693.001.93
8/31/17 - $734,722.36 and its back down to $693,001.93 in the 9/31/17 statement.
We’re talking about a difference of around $41,000, Mary. That’s not chump change.
So to sum up the district spent around $700,000 to run the campaign. It only took in around $640,000 in actual cash in hand. (Pledges aren’t money in the bank!)
So without disbursing any money to project the campaign is in the hole by around $60,000.
So where’d the disbursement money come from, Mary? That’s all taxpayers want to know!
Love the statement from Friends of Mt. Lebanon Education! Especially this part... “Community participation in that decision-making process should be encouraged.
ReplyDeleteAmen
“Don't forget this, too: Rumors aren't interested in the unsensational story; rumors don't care what's true.”
ReplyDeleteLaughable, Mary!
If you want to squelch the rumors show the taxpayers what is true!!!
So far we’ve been given 3 different financials statements for the same time periods and none of them match. So give us the truth, that’s all anyone is asking for.
Oh, besides the three different financial statements we’ve also read several different stories on the financials in the newspapers and community magazine, Mary.
ReplyDeleteThe behavior of the board president and this blog post prove the capital campaign is a Failure and taxpayers and donors should get ALL their money back. I am not in favor of giving any money to the capital campaign until professionals are hired to run it and we get a new auditor.
