There will be no special election held for the vacant House seat. We will have to wait until May.
Also, Mt. Lebanon Republicans are leaning towards the school board director who promotes kinky school girl uniforms among other things. Good news for Dan Miller and Dan Remely. Bad news for John Schnatterly.
My understanding is that the special election decision will be announced at 1:00 today.
Update 2:55 PM The "Special Election" will be held on the day of the Primary, May 21.

kinky uniforms? borders on slander.
I guess you haven't been following this post.

It is not slander. Slander is spoken. I learned that in school when I wasn't transfixed by the high school construction. I think you mean libel.
Elaine
Where will it be announced?
I believe the PA Speaker of the House is announcing it, but I just checked some websites and nothing has shown up yet.

I've been to Sassy. They do indeed sell kinky school uniforms. Remely advertised the store on HIS billboard. Therefore, Elaine's statement is fine. But 12:08, don't you fret. Sweater Vest Dan will still be around when he loses in May. If anything, the way he dresses should be a crime.
Thank you, 2:59 PM. I documented all of it in my updated post about Reintroducing Dan Remely.
Nothing slanderous OR libelous.
Elaine
Is saying the way he dresses should be a crime considered slander or libel?
I forget!
4:02 I don't think it's libelous or slanderous describing the way he dresses, the attire is actually "goofy" and no one can say that's not true!
Would love to see that court proceeding, a jury determining if the sweater vests were "goofy"...
He may have advertised the store on his billboard, but he never advocated kinky school uniforms for Lebo children.
2:59 Making fun of someone because you don't like what their choice of clothing fits the very definition of bullying. Who's the bully now? Gilly should know better!
Remely sure has bullied our municipal engineer.
4:08 PM, I see the difference now. As long as he has never advocated any of it for Lebo children makes it appropriate.
Elaine
4:13
You say he has bullied our municipal engineer.
What, is he wearing sweater vests now, too?
4:08
As a representative of Mt. Lebanon and school district, do you think it is ok for Remely to advertise on his sign for a kinky sex/clothes shop?
Let me ask it another way. Would the school board allow Sassy Sensations to advertise on one of their fences surrounding the schools?
If your answer is yes, then fine. But if you answer is no, then that is where some people see the conflict in this.
You know it's true, Elaine.
As long as 1thickdaddy didn't send pictures to Lebo kids, it's okay for the PDE to wait 18 months to pull the teaching certificate.
I get it, the sign is a result of the naming rights discussions! Remely wants to stay ahead of the competition. Yes, it could get interesting at the fields!
4:22 PM, I have emails from Timmy where he defending that individual's right to remain on the District website, long after he was gone. Nothing surprises me.
I am willing to bet that the business establishments in his shopping center are upset with that sign. SS is the clear winner. I hesitate to use the words " more bang for the buck" in their advertising dollars.
In any case, maybe this was a suggestion from the PK study.
Elaine
Sorry Elaine, have to part company with you on the direction this conversation has taken.
Not that I think you're being slanderous, bout do we really need to discuss either Sassy Sinsations, whether Dan is promoting it or his proclivity for sweater vest.
He could wear plaid Bermuda shorts, black knee high socks and sandals and if he did a good job as school director, like deliver the under $95 million building he (can we say?) promises, as a republican I'd have to consider him for state rep.
He didn't deliver and it looks like he's not the guy to keep the change orders (or future capital improvements- wink, wink, nod, nod) in check either.
Therefore Miller's the man in my opinion unless the R's pick Schnatterly and he convinces me he deliver on what he promises.
Dan Remely was and continues to be a big disappointment IMO.
4:08 Lighten up. And no, making fun of someone's attire is not illegal. Further, he's a "pubic official" and thus, he is held to a slightly different standard when it comes to mockery.
Do your research before you get on here and start blathering. Again (and I'll use small words) the billboard is Dan's. He owns it. Therefore, he has the final determination in who is advertising on it. He chose to take money from Sassy to put their name on the billboard. That was HIS choice on HIS billboard. From a strict capitalist standpoint, I say great, he's enterprising and making money, Sassy is marketing their retails business and mayeb, just maybe, some of the more uptight folks in Lebo will start to frequent the store and relax. That said, Elaine's jab is, I think, a poignant one. We can't demand our politicians set their moral bar higher than the rest of us and then ignore something like a candidate for state house taking money from a store like Sassy. Pick one because you can't have it both ways.
And Elaine never suggested Dirty Dan was advocating naughty outfits for kids. Man, where did your head go?
that should public official, with an "l"..I swear, that was a typo.
That was pretty funny. We knew what you meant.
Elaine
Let's say Sassy decides it wants to advertise on a field sign at one of the school district fences.
The ordinance I think says "appropriate" advertising is allowed.
So if the district denies Sassy, Remely (school director) having allowed the outdoor company to run Sassy's ad on his board, across from McDs frequented by kids, they could have a battle on their hands should Sassy want to.
I'm more concerned with the 42nd legislative district having no representation in the state house for 5 months.
Is this a way for the majority party to control close votes for a while.
Does the state constitution allow the special election dare to be entirely arbitrary?
What if they decided to hold it in November? How about 2014.
5:04...So we won't have any representation until May. How will that change things?
5:09 you're kidding, right?
If you don't understand it you need to go back and take Jr. High school civics.
I guess I am curious. Everyone jumps on Remely for doing something legal, but no one seems to have a problem with Goldman, who not only did something illegal, but in a very public manner. Who is setting the better example for the kids?
From Investopedia.com-
Definition of 'Taxation Without Representation'
A situation in which a government imposes taxes on a particular group of its citizens, despite the citizens not consenting or having an actual representative deliver their views when the taxation decision was made. This situation was one of the triggering events that spurred the original thirteen American colonies to revolt against the British Empire.
The 42nd legislative district is a particular group of citizens and without a representative I'm betting any decisions imposed on these citizens during the 5 months period would be unconstitutional.
It's the very foundation on which this state and federal government were founded.
Now if the legislature were going to suspend any bills for for the 5 months, you're right 5:09 it wouldn't make a difference.
I am not going to get into it about Goldman. Just like I am not going to get into it about another individual who is a role model for kids in this community. At least not until after the preliminary hearing.
I am talking about a man who is a school board director and wants to run for two offices, a man who has bullied the community over this renovation, a man who denies ever stating there was an $8 million promise from the sports groups even though the Master Design Team minutes indicate otherwise, a man who ran on the campaign promise that the renovation would be under $95 million, a man who mocked us with his R2D2 presentation saying there was no $75 million plan after I presented the 3,333 signatures asking to cap the renovation at $75 million, a man who "reluctantly" approves every damn change order that comes along, a man who votes for every salary increase for our District, gee, I might be running out of keystrokes, but if you want more, I am sure others will write in.

What do you think of this letter 5:09?
February 16, 2012
The Honorable Sam Smith
Speaker, Pennsylvania House of Representatives
139 Main Capitol Building
PO Box 202066
Harrisburg, PA 17120
Mr. Speaker:
It is a foundation of our government, first enunciated over 235 years ago in Philadelphia: people deserve to be represented in our government. Unfortunately, there are as many as 250,000 Pennsylvania citizens unrepresented in the House of Representatives at this critical time. As leaders of the counties lacking full representation, we are writing to ask for the immediate scheduling of the special elections to fill those seats.
As you know, state law requires that a date for the special election be set within 10 days of a resignation except in years where these is a new legislative map. The special election is to be held within 60 days. With the federal court’s rejection of the appeal of the state Supreme Court’s decision invalidating newly drawn legislative districts, the maps are set. Respectfully, we believe it is time to schedule the special elections.
There are important practical as well as legislative reasons to set the special elections as soon as possible. First, you should not bifurcate the primary and the special elections. This will lead to added costs on our county budgets that are already burdened by the cuts in state funding.
Second, counties are to be provided a minimum of 60 days notice of the elections in order to facilitate smooth operation. Thus, in order for our respective counties to administer the special elections on April 24, the special elections need to be set no later than the end of the second week of February.
Third, our constituents deserve, and our counties need, full representation in Harrisburg especially during these difficult budget times. In the coming weeks, there will be decisions that will impact our communities and constituents. It is simply not right to have some citizens fully represented while others are not.
In closing, we understand that this redistricting process is unprecedented and has caused confusion within the respective caucuses. However, it is critical that the special elections be called as soon as possible and occur in conjunction with the Primary on April 24.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
JOSHUA D. SHAPIRO

From Education Mews back in November-
The Patriot News is reporting that Governor Tom Corbett is hoping that now is the time for the bill that would give the state more power in the regulation of charter schools. Right before the legislature adjourned its summer session in June, it came “within a sentence” of putting a version of the bill on Corbett’s desk.
Although Corbett is making charters a priority — he said last week that reforming the way charter schools in the state are regulated will aid all education stake holders in PA — it will not be the only issue before lawmakers this session.
Just as important might be behind-the-scenes work on big-ticket issues such as transportation funding and pension reform that are too complex and controversial to finish before the Nov. 6 election but could get needed early attention for action in 2013."
You right 5:09 we don't need a voice early in 2013!
513: i was being facetious. Guess it wasnt clear enough. What i meant is that even with "representation" over the last few years it was, in essence, the same as having none at all. Smith was useless. That said, you should ease up on the junior high attitude.
6:57 yeah I did miss your point. When you have people making comments like the 5:13 one that mentions Goldman you begin to read these comments down to their lowest common denominator.
You're right, unless we get involved in the political process and start sending some new blood to Harrisburg, it won't make a difference.
If the letter above sent to the Speaker of the State House of Representatives is accurate, how can they hold off the special election for Matt Smith's seat until May?
May 21st is at least 140 days after Matt's resignation from his house seat to take the oath for his senate seat.
His the claim again made in the letter which one of the signers is our very own County Executive.
"As you know, state law requires that a date for the special election be set within 10 days of a resignation except in years where these is a new legislative map. The special election is to be held within 60 days."
Note: there is no new legislative map last year or this year.
We wonder why we cant get people to run for office. Look at the things that are said about people who run on this site. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to this?
You're right 1:25.
Nothing Goldman did has anything to do with his performance on the board and look how certain people are trying to frame him. Furthermore, his indiscretion in no way impacts the operations of the district and as of yet, he hasn't reneged on any of his campaign promises.
Now you could say Remely has been unfairly pummeled, but IMO it's been fair. He didn't deliver on bringing the project in under $95 million as promised and he touted his building management experience quite often. Yet that experience doesn't appear to be checking change order expenses.
As for the Sassy Sensations sign, that could relate to the field sign issue at some point if an advertisers sign is rejected as inappropriate.
Don't forget some PTA associated attacks too.
But there is another side here.
I don't think Dan Miller has been attacked maliciously that I can remember. He may be criticized, may be not liked, but all the comments seem to be respectful.
Why is that? Might it be because he's forthright, transparent and respectful in return?
Maybe there is a lesson to be learned for candidates for higher office.
Oh and Mr. Goldman is no more a threat to the community than those parents that find it necessary to drink at their kids athletic activities.
Bit there is another side to
1:25 PM, that is why we have mtl-Mt. Lebanon Magazine, to encourage people to run for office in a community that is similar to living in a Norman Rockwell painting.
Elaine
1:25...you're offbase. This site has gone after people pretty fairly, usually when they've done something (or in the case of our elected officials, not done something) to warrant it. But if you've followed the site, you'll also notice there have been plenty of comments giving credit where it's due.
I agree with your rehtorical question asking why anyone would run for office in Lebo. Having been through it myself, I can attest it's a rather nasty experience if you haven't kissed the ring. I don't think it's worth the hassle nor the disgusting behavior it generates on the part of a cabal of really sleazy people who have somehow planted their roots here, like an invasive species.
I'm sure there are good, decent and selfless people in our community who, given the chance, would actually push agendas that would benefit the entire community. Those good, decent people don't deserve to be dragged through the political mud that cakes our town and unfortunately, without a wholesale change to the political landscape, that kind of abhorrent nonsense will continue.
Mr. Cannon III, You are correct it does go after all. And I like that. It's when the name calling starts I have an issue. How does a comment on Mr. remley's clothes move the conversation forward? I have read posts that call Ms. Posti and Mr. brumfield names too. If you have a policy disagreement fine, but I see no reason to just call people names.
9:16 you're right it does nothing to move the ball forward. But then neither does impugning ones professional resume in the Almanac or calling for the censure of a board member that publishes his thought on the district budget.
Maybe if taxpayers weren't so frustrated with the lack of transparency and the complete disregard for acceptance of bad decisions we wouldn't see such post.
9:16 I understand your concern. But I'd have to say, making light of the way someone dresses doesn't exactly rise to the level of hate speech nor does it attack one's character. Having been through that, courtesy of both the local Dem and Republican committees as well as currently serving school board members, I'd say if the ONLY negative things that appear on this site have to do with Remely's attire or Posti's dirty looks in public meetings, those folks are getting off pretty easy.
The issue is, a majority of our elected officials seem to hold a great deal of contempt for the public. The attitude is one of sheer arrogance and disdain for criticism. It's especially galling considering those people are there voluntarily, went out of their way to raise money and run for office and yet, still don't grasp the concept they are accountable to the taxpayers.
So, does name-calling move the discussion forward? Likely not. But many of the discussions on this site wouldn't unfold if public servants would be open, transparent and honest. Our town has lost a great deal of its former luster from a few decades ago. The only way to get it back is to start from square one. And that, intrepid readers, will require (as I've advocated for in the past) a total overhaul of our local political landscape. Generally speaking, if you're one of those who sits on the sidelines and complains but doesn't participate, then you're just as culpable as the knaves taxing us into oblivion. Stand up, express yourself and demand accountability. It's your right and your obligation to do so.
I find it interesting to watch the tolerance level in my readers. Some are offended by name calling of our elected officials, but look the opposite way when those same elected officials stick it to us royally. Lying is acceptable, raping our wallets is tolerable, taking advertising money for establishments that have warnings on their website is unobjectionable, lack of transparency is passable, being ignored is par for the course, rudeness and arrogance are to be expected, but bring in the fashion police, and people go bonkers. Really, folks? That is what upsets you?
Elaine
Well Elaine, H. L. Mencken said: "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."
So think about, residents will spend endless hours watching "Say yes to the dress", "The Kardashians", "Housewives of Beverly Hills", and the other senseless dribble, but won't attend a board meeting or even vote come election time.
Look at Mt. Lebanon magazine, does it do any investigative reporting?
Does it give both sides of the story on issues pertaining to the community? Nope, if it's not fluffing it's own nest, it's catering to the Lifestyles of the we think we're rich and famous social scene.
Now, if you wrote a blog Elaine, on who was wearing the latest fashions from Target, Talbots or Chico's everybody would love you.
It is all falling into place. This is on Facebook.

We hear Vera Bradley lunch bags are all the rage with Howe School third-grade girls, who have cast off Hello Kitty and other pink things. Don't know whether that makes it good or bad new for parents to learn that a Vera Bradley Story is soon to open on the lower level of South Hills Village.
I love this comment:
This post was written by someone who publishes a magazine?! For shame.

Will it be a good or bad Vera Bradley 'Story' if they choose to advertise in mtl magazine after that Facebook post?
