Better late than never

With the end of the first nine weeks long gone, and months after approving the Superintendent's new contract OMG They want to keep him through June 30, 2019, the school board finally got around to releasing the Superintendent Goals 2013-2014.

Mt. Lebanon School District
Superintendent Goals 2013-2014

Goal 1: The Superintendent will operate the District in a fiscally responsible manner.
Goal 2: The Superintendent will maintain or improve student achievement across the District.
Goal 3: The Superintendent will lead the District’s effort to successfully manage the High School construction/renovation project.
Goal 4: The Superintendent will lead efforts to implement the Strategic Plan across the District.
Goal 5: The Superintendent will engage and collaborate with other employees of the District as well as members of the community.
Goal 6: The Superintendent will continue to advance student learning and teacher development through effective utilization of technology.

I do find it odd that the word "ALL" is missing. School board members pledge to :

  • Advocate for ALL students at all times.
  • Ensure effective and efficient operations to prepare ALL students to be successful in a global society.

Shouldn't the Superintendent advocate for high standards and expectations of excellence for ALL students?

In Newton, MA, the superintendent issued a 38 page memorandum showing how "superintendents are now evaluated on four standards, 41 indicators and 21 elements. In addition to evaluating the superintendent on the basis of the standards selected from the Evaluation Matrix for Superintendents, each superintendent must have at least two additional goals: a professional practice goal, a student achievement goal, and two to four district improvement goals."

The Newton superintendent attached Evaluation Standards, Superintendent Evaluation Rubrics, as well as an informational packet for the school board and teachers on Implementing Evaluation Framework. One footnote worth mentioning is
The Attorney General has recently issued guidance in the form of frequently asked questions concerning the procedure to conduct superintendent evaluations pursuant to the revised Open Meeting Law (c. 28, s. 18 2009).
Since we, the stakeholders, are not involved in the superintendent evaluation process, perhaps the "End-of-Cycle Summative Evaluation Report: Superintendent" process could be implemented here in Mt. Lebanon. How would our superintendent rate?

The MTLSB goals for the Superintendent have no measurable deliverables. One out of three random selections of individuals from the telephone book could meet the MTLSD's Superintendent's vague goals. What should be required is a performance plan with with measurable outcomes which can be evaluated on a quarterly basis. The Newton, MA performance could serve as a viable model for the MTLSD.

" The Newton, MA performance could serve as a viable model for the MTLSD."

So could almost any episode of "The Dog Whisperer."

Hasn't Tim already missed on Goal #2?

According to the 11/5/13 post here on the Balanced Scorecard it reads: "PSSA scores show that District writing went up, while reading, math, and science scores declined."

The scores indicate he isn't maintaining or improving scores, but hey who's counting... Right?

Timmy gets an "F" for number 5. He can only dictate, he can't communicate effectively with the community or the school employees.

It really is hard to understand why there seem to be no standards or expectations set for the superintendent. I suppose our board members believe that if he is fulfilling their requirements, then he is doing well for ALL the people in Mt Lebanon.

When the superintendent's evaluation is finished the board members agree on his strengths and weakness.

Then when someone says, "But if we don't give him the raise he wants he might leave."

The vote for the raises pass because the Board(s) have no courage.

looks more like a job description, not a set of goals. just enough to keep a job.

How many supers have we had since Sable?
Has there been any noticable change +/- in any district measurement?
If Tim threatens to leave-- help him pack his bags and give the job to Davis.
Who needs someone that holds that little regard for the district.

5:52 PM, the only change I have noticed is the tremendous turnover in principals. They just welcomed another one for Hoover. The present principal is retiring the last week of January.

The Jefferson Elementary Principal just announced his resignation yesterday. He's leaving in January as well.

I am sure there is a logical explanation for principals leaving in the middle of a school year. Or is this a red flag, school board? I know Timmy reports to you and the principals report to...Timmy?

It might be they're miffed that Lincoln's principal was the only one taken out for a latte on tthe first day of school.

I'm thinking that some of these Principals have high moral ethics and don't agree with how the students should be treated. Principals have to bend their ethics in order to stay in the system.

So the Hoover principal is retiring in January... is it normal for educators to leave in the middle of a school year? And Jefferson is leaving too? We need info on the longevity in elementary school principals in Mt Lebo since Dr. Steinhauer's arrival because I can already think of 5 changes in leadership. Lincoln's principal has only been there 1 year, and the prior principal was only there a few years, Foster's principal just arrived from a middle school, and ??

This IS worrisome.

I wonder how Deb Allen figures into this? I think the Elementary Principals actually report to her, right?

9:16 YOU ARE EXACTLY RIGHT. "Principals have to bend their ethics in order to stay in the system".

Lebo Citizens said...

9:49 PM, maybe not. Deb Allen is retiring in March. Why would two elementary school principals be retiring in January? Who is replacing Deb Allen? Why the high turnover in principals? Is everyone jumping ship?

Deb Allen has trained Pete Berg to take her place. The bullying and discrimination goes on. Administrators are bullied to keep the norm! It's disgusting!

Elaine - had the retirements preceded the student newspaper official response? One may remember a Blogger's retort during the heated Devil's Advocate exchange - "you would be surprised who you are talking to..." A principal perhaps?

Lebo Citizens said...

12:18 AM, I can't respond to that. I learned of the Hoover retirement from the MTLSD website and school board meeting when they were welcoming the new principal. I learned of the Jefferson Elementary retirement from the Nov. 21 8:50 PM comment posted above.
It would be interesting to document the turnover in administration. Anyone have that information?

The only one I am aware of is Patrick McClintock-Comeaux's departure. He left Foster Elementary in 2012 to become principal at Baker Elementary in USC.

Marc Thornton, principal Jefferson Elementary moves to North Allegheny.

Sounds like Thorton made a lateral move to NA so it was either salary, commute, or dissatisfaction with Mt Lebanon School District...right?

I have been rereading comments under "RTK concerning the Devil's Advocate article UPDATED." I found a couple comments which may shed some light on the exodus.

"People. If Steinhauer bullies principals and parents, what do you think he does to the Board of Education? There is something scary about this "educator".

November 4, 2013 at 12:41 PM"

"8:55 pm You are fortunate that you haven't experienced anything worthy of a complaint to a higher level. However, if you have children here, consider yourself forewarned. Some of us who blog here are educators, lawyers, or professionals with expertise in these areas. You would be surprised by who you are telling to "grow up".

MTL SB needs to stop the bleeding over the "scary 'educator'" !
