Gulp. UPDATED at 3:40 PM

I just posted this comment, only to receive the letter that Timmy sent out this morning.
What I found more disturbing is how Mt. Lebanon ranks in the safest schools categories. #13 in safest schools in Allegheny County does not warm my heart. https://www.niche.com/k12/search/safest-school-districts/c/allegheny-county-pa/ Why are we looking at overnight parking?
Here is the letter that was sent to parents this morning.

From: Dr. Timothy Steinhauer <noreply@mtlsd.net>
Sent: Monday, January 29, 2018 10:40 AM
To: Mt. Lebanon Parents
Subject: Important Message from Mt. Lebanon School District

Dear Mt. Lebanon Parents,
As you may be aware from media reports this morning, a threat against an unnamed Pittsburgh area school is being investigated by federal authorities and the Pittsburgh Police.
We have been in contact with the Mt. Lebanon Police Department early this morning, and they have confirmed that there is no known specific threat against the Mt. Lebanon School District.
In an abundance of caution, the Mt. Lebanon Police will have an increased presence in and around our buildings. We are carefully monitoring our school buildings and grounds. All staff are on alert to look for and immediately report anything unusual or suspicious.
Again, there is no known specific threat to the Mt. Lebanon School District.  Maintaining a safe school environment for our students and staff  is our highest priority.
I want you to know that we take all threats seriously and we are monitoring this situation very carefully. If other pertinent information becomes available, I will be sure to communicate it to you.
Sincerely,
Timothy J. Steinhauer, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Subject: *Update on Important Message from School District*

Dear Mt. Lebanon Parents,
We were just informed that the reported threat of violence at a “Pittsburgh” school was a hoax that originated in Florida. While we are grateful that this incident turned out to be a hoax, it reminds us of the value of remaining alert and taking these types of threats seriously.
Please help us by reporting any information that could impact the safety or welfare of our students or staff immediately to the Mt. Lebanon Police Department (9-1-1), your child’s principal, or to me.
Sincerely,

Timothy J. Steinhauer, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Perhaps that’s why we needed a (secure?) $70,000 trophy case.

It is good that the district is alert but the 13th ranking is disconcerting for sure.

How are the rankings even compiled and what is Niche evaluating as safe criteria?

This news didn't bother me as it suggests that parents and staff are actually reporting some unsavory facts about the ongoings in Mt Lebanon schools. This is actually the opposite of fake news from Lebo. Hopefully, with the reporting in place, more is done to prevent bullying, truancy, etc.

Does the district, however, report discipline findings to the community? Last I checked, it didn't and the high school website said they didn't keep those records. At the elementary schools, one principal (Dr. Irvin at the time) stated that she shredded prior year discipline records. So how can safety be measured effectively if records are shredded? Maybe they count up the incidents and then shred? Who knows!

12:00 am does that really matter?
However the data is compiled it is still out there and remains to be seen by prospective homebuyers.

Couple of questions for you 12:00 am. Do you believe there is a grand conspiracy at work at Niche to make MTLSD look bad and if the district were ranked #1 would you even be questioning how the rankings were made?

Lebo has the same "Health and Saftey" grade of an A as both NA and USC... Trying to make trouble?

Anonymous said...

Also, the health and safety data I cited were for the high school buildings* But even so, you're mad the district got an A ranking?

Anonymous said...

If only there was way too determine the methodology of this dumb rating.

In case reading isn't your strong suit, 50% of the rating is from boneheads filling out a Niche survey, presumably the same busybodies who had a two week discussion on Nextdoor about if muggings were an issue in Uptown. Only 5% is made up of police actions in the schools.

Gulp.

12:00 AM, if you looked at the data more closely, Niche included the methodology used. It is available here. https://about.niche.com/methodology/safest-school-districts/

8:56 AM, factors considered had nothing to do with the buildings. Also, I was citing rankings, not the overall grades. You are confusing rankings with ratings and overall grades. Technically, Mt. Lebanon received an A rating with Quaker Valley, South Park, and Montour. The districts you referenced received A+ ratings. Wouldn't you want your children to go to the highest RANKING in the area? Is 13th good enough for you? Evidently.

No one is mad at the rankings, except for you apparently.

The rankings are out there for anyone to see, especially potential homebuyers that are looking for a district in which to raise their kids. The fact that we do or don’t like the rankings (we don’t run the survey) has nothing to do with it.

11:04, wow! So you somehow arrived at a position that contributors to the survey are boneheads. Nice, that’s very neighborly of you.

I wonder why the districts that rank above Mt. Lebanon don’t have a similar concentration of “boneheads” driving down their rank?

At any rate, what is so nice about Elaine’s blog is that anyone is free to express their opinion, hopefully without being called names. I’m pretty if you wanted to do a survey/ranking of districts to expose Niche’s flawed one I’m betting Elaine would be open to posting it.

That way we could see where the ‘boneheads’ really reside.

Have there been mugging recently Uptown?
