Graffitti in the bathroom

So, what did the “perceived” and “non-credible” threat say?

Subject: Graffiti in Bathroom

Dear Parent/Guardian:

This afternoon, two students reported to school officials finding what they perceived as a threat written in a bathroom stall at the high school.  Upon learning this information, the Mt. Lebanon Police Department was immediately contacted. Both the Mt. Lebanon Police and our administrators immediately responded and conducted an onsite threat assessment. The threat was deemed to be non-credible and no further action was recommended.

School safety and security is our number one priority.  We appreciate that these students immediately shared this information with school officials.  I want to reinforce that it is important that students, parents, staff, and other members of our school community should always feel comfortable reporting any concerns they may have to a principal or to the Mt. Lebanon Police.

I appreciate our continued partnership ensuring a safe school environment for our students, staff, and visitors.

Sincerely,

Brian R. McFeeley

Comment from Appellate court says Mt. Lebanon deer cull participants can remain private:
Rand Tobias 1 day ago, Post-Gazette
Ms. Gillen,
You have many admirable qualities. You are relentless! You are passionate! If I ran a nonprofit I would hire you in an instant. And although you may want to highlight your civic minded altruism to the readers here, I would encourage you to take a dispassionate look at your own words over the past several years on your blog. Your tone is divisive, you encourage name calling, and I would argue that you while you call a lot of attention to yourself and your causes, you effect little change. And I believe this is because much of what you and your readers contribute to the public conversation is mean spirited. As far as the pg not covering the minutiae of Mt. Lebanon civic life, we are not the center of the universe. Please, reflect on your part in the divisiveness you are highlighting. It isn't healthy. You could do a tremendous amount of good if you redirected more of your energies to a worthier cause than the real time critiques of small town leaders who, whether you believe it are not, are not part of some big cabal to torture animals. Sometimes the universe tells us we are on the wrong track; Hopefully this court decision provides you with similar insight. Best regards and happy holidays!

Sorry, still learning what is to be covered up and to which worthier causes I am to redirect my energies, Rand Tobias.

A letter from the high school principal

Someone forwarded this email to me today.  I don't have children at the high school, but I still like to be informed of pilot programs, especially concerning technology.  I thought it would be something other taxpayers would be interested in reading, as well.

Dear Mt. Lebanon High School Parents/Guardians:

I'm pleased to announce the introduction of the Mt. Lebanon High School "Bring Your Own Technology" initiative that allows students to utilize their personal technology devices under certain circumstances and in certain areas of the high school building. This pilot program will focus on empowering students to use their personal technology devices for learning purposes in our educational setting.

This new initiative will be implemented in two ways as described below.

1. Beginning today in the high school library, guest network internet access is available to all faculty, staff, students, and guests. Students may now bring and use their own larger personal technology devices such as laptops, netbooks, iPads, Kindles, etc., in the library. In other words, the high school library is now considered a wi-fi "hot-spot" in ways similar to that of the public library, a coffee shop, a Panera's restaurant, etc. Please note that the use of cell phones/iPhones is still prohibited in the library.

2. The second option available to students and teachers will occur within individual classrooms. A group of teachers have volunteered to participate in this pilot program by allowing the use of students' personal technology devices including larger devices (laptops, netbooks, iPads, Kindles, etc.) and personal hand-held devices (cell phones, iPhones, iPods, etc.) within their classroom if their use is appropriate as part of the teacher's lesson. Participating teachers will inform students if they are participating in this pilot, and they will inform students when they are permitted to bring in and use a personal technology device in their class. (At all other times, use of these personal technology devices continues to not be permitted including in hallways, other classrooms, etc., during the school day.)

Please note that if your son or daughter brings a personal technology device, including a laptop, iPad, iPhone, etc., to school to use in the library or in a class with a teacher's approval, he or she is solely responsible for the security and maintenance of their device.

The high school faculty, administration, and district technology department, will be evaluating the outcomes of this pilot throughout the semester with the possibility of expanding the program during the 2nd semester. The cooperation of all students will be essential in helping to make this a successful initiative.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Brian R. McFeeley

Ta Da!

Five months after the start of Year Two's contract and six weeks after the School Board voted on a salary increase, Dr. Steinhauer's 2010-2011 Goals have finally been posted on the MTLSD website.

1. Fiscal Management - The Superintendent will operate the District in a fiscally responsible manner, identifying cost savings and revenue generating opportunities.
2. High School Project – The Superintendent will continue the District’s efforts to build/renovate the High School.
3. Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) – The Superintendent will implement the terms of the new teacher CBA.
4. Strategic Plan – The Superintendent will guide the District in making progress toward meeting or exceeding all goals established by the current Strategic Plan. In addition, the Superintendent will position the District to begin development of a new strategic plan during the 2011-2012 school year.
5. Student Achievement – The Superintendent will implement measures to improve student achievement.
6. Technology – The Superintendent will direct an assessment of the District’s technological capabilities.
Superintendent Goals 2010-2011
The High School Renovation Project comes in at Number Two.  Oh yeah, Student Achievement is Number Five.  Does Number Six mean there is spell check in our future?  Not that a school district should need spell check...

Was it something they said?

A recent email to members of the High School PTSA showed that membership is down from 916 last year to 674 members this year.  That is a 26.4% drop in membership from last year.  In jest, the PTSA President asked, "Was it something we said?"  There is a message here somewhere.  WAS it something they said?  Are people cutting back because they don't have the money to pay the $8.00 membership?  That is the equivilent to two lattes, the new gold standard in Mt. Lebanon. Do they not agree with the High School renovation project as it stands?  Or are parents unhappy with the way the High School is being run in general?
