Some Children Left Behind
According to Dr. Davis' report last night, MTLSD has been given a warning. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which is bipartisan, students with special needs are not meeting their targets. Josephine Posti, Ron Davis, and Tim Steinhauer feel that this legislation is ridiculous. We must have 100% success and that sounds difficult to achieve, they say. Here is part of the presentation made last night. AYP Presentation AYP stands for Adequate Yearly Progress. It turns out that there is an appeal process available, with the deadline being August 7, 2012. 2012 Appeals Process Looks like they missed that. NCLB Section 1116(b)(7)(C)(iv)
A local educational agency shall identify for school improvement any elementary school or secondary school served under this part that fails, for 2 consecutive years, to make adequate yearly progress as defined in the State's plan.
Identify the school for corrective action and take at least one of the following corrective actions:
(I) Replace the school staff who are relevant to the failure to make adequate yearly progress.
(II) Institute and fully implement a new curriculum, including providing appropriate professional development for all relevant staff, that is based on scientifically based research and offers substantial promise of improving educational achievement for low-achieving students and enabling the school to make adequate yearly progress.
(III) Significantly decrease management authority at the school level.
(IV) Appoint an outside expert to advise the school on its progress toward making adequate yearly progress, based on its school plan under paragraph (3).
(V) Extend the school year or school day for the school.
And which of the 4 corrective action options will the District totally disregard, and which will they attempt to discredit as inadvisable in the bubble here so that they can apply for the check-the-box-for-an-automatic-waiver result they are accustomed to in dealing with the PDE in Harrisburg ?
Which will our "I'm looking out to make sure State and local government works for you" Smith enforce?
Well I guess if you're of the "glass half full persuasion" youcould say Dr. Steinhauer exceeded expectations.
I thought we'd receive zero state NCLB warnings.
We got one, that certainly exceeding expectations. LOL
Well then, this must be why the elementary schools have extended the school day this year. Now, if they could just teach our children the right way to do math instead of having them draw number lines to "guesstimate" the answers, that would be impressive indeed.

Hey 4:23, if we extend the school day can we get afternoon recess back in the elementary schools?

These rebating public employees live in municipality and vote.
Assuming 300 school district Employees, their spouses and one voting age child vote for a school director that promises hefty raises and perks, due to low voter turnout, they are almost assured of getting their man or woman in!
I don't think 1,000 votes separated the top vote getter from the odd man out in the last SB election.
