Hey commissioners, here's a suggestion that will get rid of deer, eventually reduce DUIs and it'll be very cost-effective.
During Beerfest spray that deer attractant on the front bumper of everyones' vehicle. You'll kill a lot of deer and people after incurring expensive car repairs will hopefully learn drinking and driving isn't a good idea.
I initially thought I was being sarcastic, but it's not nearly as absurd as buying a parking spot finder app for smartphones while spending money on a Look Up Lebo campaign.
Doesn't this incident prove why residents should know where and whom is conducting the authorized cull!
If the volunteers haven't been hunting in Twin Hills, then this person could be an unauthorized hunter and people have no idea if they're a good shot or not.
Elaine,, please excuse my ignorance,, but is deer attractant excluded from our cull...?? Unf I think the folks who want the deer cull stopped are few and far between.. Most of the establishment (people with money) think as them as rats.. and I surprisingly when I talk to the young families with children they also see them as a nuisance..
11:25, how smart is it use deer attractant in an area where you are trying to get rid of deer?!
Once again, let's review.
We paid for expensive aerial surveys (supposedly the most accurate way to count deer) and they found less than 200. But our commissioners knew better and contracted for a corral and kill... which netted 6 or 7 deer. Then we had an archery hunt, sharpshooters and yet another archery hunt... all of which didn't yield very many deer. Through all this effort and expense the number of deer/vehicle accidents has gone up. Apparently, now some nimrod is spreading deer attractant to ATTRACT deer near the Virginia Manor area. All I can say is wow, what a brilliant plan! Yeah, McGill says he doesn't know if the white stuff is deer attractant. Right, it's possibly some fairy spreading unicorn attractant so we have more rainbows.
Why haven't the "volunteer" archers been very active in Twin Hills Park? Is it too much like hunting? Too much work? Why have to deal with brush when you can hunt from someone's deck? Why did Mt. Lebanon make such a big deal about using Twin Hills Park and not use it? Why do we need deer attractant? Didn't the Cornell expert, who knew nothing about Mt. Lebanon, estimate that we have between 700 and 900 deer to kill? Remember the map of 800 dots that a reader created for me? We should be seeing deer everywhere! Instead, we're told that the kills are about half of what they were last year, even with Twin Hills Park's 25 additional acres thrown in! Elaine
You got it, Elaine! According to DiNicola's Cornell expert's count shooting 700-900 deer in 6 acres should be akin to shooting fish in a barrel, but they can't do it. Several possibilities, the commissioners have either contracted with the most inept hunters since Elmer Fudd went after that "wascal wabbit" or we're being conned and there aren't that many deer here.
Now regarding McGill's response. It's up to him, game commission or the police to figure out who's spraying this white powder. If it's deer attractant and the sprayer isn't part of the authorized hunt, he's a poacher! If he's a poacher, he probably isn't licensed to hunt deer (especially in a public park or on private property) and probably will disregard safe shooting restrictions. McGill need to quit shirking his responsibilities and get to the bottom of this. It's not up to private citizens to apprehend a possible law-breaker.
6:26 PM, PLEASE call 911 and ask to speak with an officer. Or email Chief Aaron Lauth at alauth@mtlebanon.org. I don't know what else you can do. Elaine
That white stuff stays in place indefinitely. Now that I know what it is, I am realizing they (the poacher or the hunters) have been using it on the trees and throughout the park for a while. I think that pretended they were numbering trees last year but it was just simply attractant because nothing ever happened to the trees (in other words, the numbers were senseless). Further, the white spray is mineral based so it doesn't come off no matter the weather.
However, since these discoveries, I read it is illegal to hunt lawfully in areas that have been sprayed with this stuff. The PGC says all of it has to be removed before a legal hunt. Thus, if it is still on trees and the ground next year, I don't think the archers can lawfully hunt in Twin Hills Park.
There you go 'gardeners,' have the taxpayers foot the bill for your culls until the cows come home, but as long as the attractant is in your area you're going to have deer.

The proclaimed goal of all the culling is to reduce deer/vehicle accidents, correct?
Then why is some nimrod spraying deer attractant on curbs?
Have our commissioners and municipal manager completely lost their minds?

No, let's keep everything secret.

12:25, how smart is it to use deer attractant on curbs ? We're should be luring them away from roads - not towards roads !

11:21 AM, I'm sure you meant 6 square miles, not 6 acres, right?
Elaine
Yes, my bad, 6 square miles.
In this 2001 paper about deer from Penn State, they figure Pennsylvania had about 30 deer per square mile.
White Buffalo's Cornell "expert" is claiming, without ever having visited Mt. Lebanon, that today we have between 116 to 150 deer per square mile.
It's funny that the aerial surveys Lebo conducted are pretty darn close to Penn State's 30 deer per square mile average.

The man in the park is NOT legit (sources).

It's anarchy here in Mt. Lebanon.

11:09, trouble is, who will enforce the law.
Certainly not 'hear no evil, see no evil, say no evil.'
There you go 'gardeners,' have the taxpayers foot the bill for your culls until the cows come home, but as long as the attractant is in your area you're going to have deer.
Way to go!
11:09 PM, last year's photos of the numbered trees in Twin Hills are here.
