MOUNT LEBANON (KDKA) – Officials are investigating a reported bear sighting in Mt. Lebanon.
A black bear was seen leaving Mt. Lebanon and Castle Shannon, headed into Bethel Park. A Mt. Lebanon Police dash cam captured the bear running across the road.
“The animal’s running through back yards,” said Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Aaron Lauth. “Nobody saw it stationary, just sitting there.”
The state game commission was notified.
“They are looking for food and they’re looking for new territory,” said Gary Fujak with the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
In this bear’s case, his foraging took him into Bethel Park and Regina Sewall’s backyard. What she was a bunch of police.
“They gathered in the turnaround at the end of our street and they were talking and all of a sudden they pointed and said, ‘there it is!’” she said. “And I had no idea what they were talking about.”
The game commission says it will take reports and track the bear, but it’s impossible to trap a moving target.
“If he takes up residence in one of our communities, we’ll set the trap and try to catch him and tag him and move him at least 100 miles away from Pittsburgh,” Fujak said.
No traps have been set, but police suspect it may be the same bear that was spotted in Moon last week.
The game commission says if you see the bear, give it a wide berth and let it continue on its way.

Perhaps this is the new deer culling program Mt. Lebanon has been waiting for :-)
Tax the bear!
I expect intellectual consistency from all commenters on this topic. If you're against the deer cull, you better be against killing this bear.
Are you sure that report didn't have a typo and it should have said 'bare' sighting.
As in - the turf emperors have no clothes.
We are being consistent, 11:46 AM; likewise, Ms. Linfante will be organizing a bear culling after a coyote culling after the deer culling.
Elaine
The bear heard about the artificial turf and decided to move here. He's all-in!
Dave x3, does a bear's claws void the turf warranty?
The bear would be better off in Manhattan; there's more open space there. With our 5% and dropping, he better move on to the city.
11:46AM -- What is intellectually "consistent" about sending armed snipers into residential neighborhoods in densely populated areas? Have you seen the signs that say "Drive as is YOUR kids lived here"? Shame on you and your snide mouth.
About those "Drive as your kids live here" signs.
When did this become a neccessity?
Does their proliferation in MTL indicate the attitude of the community that it is 'All About Me'?
I don't see nearly as many of these signs as I drive through other communities.
Elaine: Mt. Lebanon is truly a bubble. Its leaders and many activists within its borders refuse to respect the fact that not everyone is alike, in perspective, in finances, in health, or in many other ways. What the insiders here see and care about, is a cash cow that they can milk at their leisure and never stop to consider their impact on others. The signs, implicitly telling "outsiders" "if you don't live here, don't drive here" is just one more symptom of a community reeling out of control with self-absorption and contempt for the needs (note: "needs" not "wants") of others.
Bears and coyotes are nature culler's - they consider small deer to be prey.
Maybe we should look into stuffed or animatronic bear. I mean, they eat less, can be controlled and only need to be replaced every 6 to 8 years. And I don't understand. Could have sworn I heard Gatway say there aren't bear in Lebo...right after they claimed the baseball fields arent in a floodplain.
6:06 Actually, the signs started when so-called traffic calming measures failed to be undertaken on streets that had been waiting for over a decade. The same streets measured excessively high rates of speed among drivers, high volumes and many also do not have any sidewalks despite serving as the main walking route to schools in a community that does not offer busing and promotes itself as a walking community. Some of the streets are considered hazardous per the PA Educational Code for walking routes to school. The street signs are designed to induce empathy among drivers so they might consider what it feels like to live on a street in which drivers do not abide by the speed limit or continue to use the residential street as a cut through. Clearly, that empathy tactic isn't working and the so-called traffic calming isn't moving along either. But perhaps the signs wouldn't be so offensive if 2 million dollars weren't being spent to strip mine a couple of acres that should be considered "in the public trust".
Again, 6:27... is it "All About Me" attitudes?
How many and how high will we have to build speed humps before drivers - both MTL and outsiders understand that 25mph or 15mph signs mean just what they say.
Notice in the update that there was no mention of killing the bear, 11:46 AM.
Elaine
The Commissioners don't have any intention of killing the bear, they simply want to track it down so as to levy a Newcomers Tax on it's den.
Dances with deer
No one called the police!
8:56, that is funny!
The bear went over the mountain, the bear went over the mountain, the bear went over the mountain...to see what he could see.
And all that he could see, and all that he could see, were a bunch of wannabee LEBOites, a bunch of wannabee LEBOites, a bunch of wannabee LEBOites - so he ran to Bethel Park!
7:24 People should follow the rules, but we have laws and rules because they don't always do so which requires social intervention by the state (always a last resort). The issue is not that you, and all of us, should not be concerned about the safety of children, quite the contrary, we worry about the known and suspected harmful effects of artificial turf, for example. Another example, is sending snipers with high-powered rifles out into densely populated neighborhoods on a search and destroy mission - perhaps what is called for is another sign that says "don't shoot - children live here."
I think the bear is going to go home and tell its friends that the rumor that Mt Lebanon doesn't have consistent trash and recycling pick up is definitely true.
Expect more bear sightings.
Republic promised the commission this evening that they will be caught up by Friday. Two drivers were terminated this morning and have been replaced.
Elaine
The deer are apparently leaving according to the latest count, now a bear is caught leaving for Bethel -- could this be the warning sign of a mass exodus from the bubble?
If we see a significant drop in rat sightings around the Washington Road business district it'll be time to abandon ship as the USS MTL is going down.
The rats are still in a meeting on Washington Road. You have it reversed 9:01; the ship goes down the longer they stay.
