Dear Parents/Guardian:
Our students and staff have been working hard on final preparations for the annual Snowball Dance on Saturday, February 9th. As I communicated with you in October, several changes will be in effect for this dance and future dances to help ensure a safe, welcoming, and behaviorally appropriate dance setting for all of our students. These changes are being made after many discussions with the high school administration, students, and teachers.
Attached is a dance expectations and permission form that is required to be reviewed and signed by each student and his/her parent prior to the purchase of a ticket. No ticket will be sold to a student without submission of this completed form. (Additional copies of this form are available in the Activities Office, the Attendance Office, and Entrance C-28.) I ask that you review the expectations on this form with your son or daughter if they plan to attend the dance. Tickets will be available for purchase in the Activities Office beginning Wednesday, January 23.
In particular, I would like to bring your attention the following expectations and procedures:
-Dance agreement and permission form must be completed before a ticket may be purchased.
-Tickets will NOT be sold at the door.
-Students must enter the dance by 9pm.
-Students will be permitted to leave the dance at anytime, but will NOT be permitted to re-enter. (Parents will NOT be notified if a student leaves the dance early. This is the same practice that occurs at athletic and other extra-curricular events.)
-Drugs, alcohol, weapons, tobacco and any other illegal and/or dangerous contraband are not permitted.
-Portable breathalyzers will be on site and may be used.
-All backpacks, bags, and purses will be searched prior to entry. All students will be required to empty their pockets prior to entry.
-Inappropriate, sexually explicit dancing including grinding and back to front dancing is prohibited. Students will be immediately removed from the dance and sent home. NO warnings will be given.
-Any student who violates any of the rules/expectations at the dance may not be permitted to attend any future dances during their tenure at Mt. Lebanon High School.

Watch for the not-so-subtle back door threats from MTLSD suck-ups, Elaine. And anony comments with misspellings, likely from the PIO, or what are actually quotes sans attribution and that be JoPo.
You have to wonder what Scott Goldman thinks of this.
I would tell my child to refuse a breathalyzer. They are not accurate.
They do not delineate the counsequences of failure to submit to a breathalyzer.
11:22 AM, I let that one go through. I feel badly for Scott. Some people in this community can get three felony charges dismissed. Scott just doesn't know the right people.

@11:23 Because of parents like you, we have a drug & alcohol problem in Mount Lebanon.
Mr. McFeeley is stuck between the rock and a hard place and we've all including himself put him there.
Sen. Grassely's opening remark in today's gun hearing puts it all in focus: “lack of civility” had grown pervasive in U.S. society.
We see it in school board president letters in the press. Director's verbal bullying of a parent speaking at the podium. Illegal political emails from the PTA. And yes comments from anonymous people on the blogs.
But it goes beyond that. Do we need beer and hard liquor at youth sports games? Do we need to rip down candidate posters at the polls.? Steal yard signs? Call the police for a minor slip of the tongue?
Is it any surprise that our kids don't know how to act at a dance?
Is it any wonder that we're where we are today?
Our community magazine's lastest effort "will not deal in controversial local or national issues—there are plenty of blogs for that—and in keeping with our website policy, it will not be a place to express political opinions or to criticize the opinions of other residents"

Now Mr. McFeeley only states that breathalyzers will be available and that doesn't cause any problems in my mind. As long as it's not used randomly.
I still believe in the 4th amendment in the Bill of Rights.
Now if Mt. McFeeley finds it necessary to administer the test for suspicion, I hope he immediately calls the parents and tells them why he felt it necessary to do. Then I hope the parents are mature enough to sit down and explain to their kids why their behavior attracked attention.
I would tell my child to do both,
and ask the staff and board of school directors to submit to the same testing.

"Prom turns teacher into drunk dirty dancer

A high school prom in New York City got out of control when teachers and chaperones started drinking.
The prom was held on a yacht that sailed around Manhattan for three hours. Things started getting wild when bartenders began handing out drinks to the adults onboard.
Adult teachers began to party with the students, and then one teacher began kissing and hanging on one of the students. A camera set to catch the action broadcast the make out session throughout the ship.
The 25-year-old teacher, Lindsay Dinaj, quit her job in December as a result of a school investigation into the incident. The investigation revealed that the student had been having a relationship with the chemistry teacher (yes, she taught chemistry) for several months before the prom. The student was 18 during the entire affair.
The question on the minds of many is why alcohol was being served at a high school prom in the first place.
Parents, you've got to check this stuff out. Suddenly it's not a given that your child's dance or school activity will be alcohol free. And if your high school student is spending time alone with a teacher, you should investigate."
Do parents condone underage drinking? Are you kidding me?? Some of them practically hold mixology classes. They want to make sure the kids are adequately prepared for their college years.

How does the school know they will eventually arrive at their house?
Do they notify the parents their kid should arrive home soon?
Reminds me of the song "Closing Time" "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here".
So the kids are rewarded by being sent to do their dirty dancing elsewhere without their parents knowing?

gotta love the justice in this community. Goldman gets popped for what, being intoxicated and some traffic violation? But the school district violates state law, lies to the community, adds untold millions to the community debt, violates FEDERAL law by using the PTA as their own little communications surrogate and nothing happens? From what my high school daughter has told me, most of the kids have now decided to go to the under 21 dance club in the strip district that night.

OMG! It was pointed out to me that in the "How Far From 100" teacher guide, there is a mistake!!! The number closest to 100 is not 127! It is 126!!!

@12:26 you have got to be kidding right? because of me we have a drug and alcohol problem in the community. LOL! No I would expect my child not to drink, but I would also tell him to refuse the breathalyzer because they are often incorrect and there are many false positives. I also do not trust the Mt. Lebo police, look at what happened to Mr. Goldman.
You are under the notion that breathalyzers will stop a drug/alcohol problem. You should go to a training given by Gateway and educate yourself.
3:24, There is a reason they call it the "strip district."
Nice going parents, the kids can't behave and the parents can't be bothered supporting the school. If there aren't enough kids attending the dance, the school should shut down the dances like they did the senior boat ride. Let the parents figure it out!
MTLSD field trips were unwelcome at the Carnegie Museum a few years back, I believe.
Good idea - drive the kids to the Strip District. No problems with drugs or drinking (or guns) there.
One Dead, Three Injured In Strip District Night Club Shooting
Homicide Detectives Continue Investigation

PITTSBURGH -- Police said four people were shot at Fever Nightclub in the Strip District Saturday night.
According to police, a 20-year-old man was shot several times in his torso, and a second victim, a 21-year-old man, was shot in the leg.
Both victims were transported by Pittsburgh EMS to area hospitals.
The 20-year-old man was said to be in critical condition, while the second victim was treated and released.
The third shooting victim has been identified as 27-year-old Shateecha Roach, of Pittsburgh.
Roach was reported shot at Penn Avenue and 20th street in the area of the night club. She was transported to UPMC-Presbyterian with gunshot wounds to the neck and chest. She was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
A fourth victim, also a 21-year-old man, fled from the area and later reported that he was grazed by gunfire while inside the night club.
So far, no arrests have been reported.
Homicide detectives are asking for anyone who was inside Club Fever at the time of the shootings, or who may have information regarding the death of Roach,to please contact them immediately at 412-323-7161. Callers can remain anonymous.

On a positive note, just read the post on the district site about kids at Mellon tutorinng seniors how to use computers. That's really great and the teacher that instituted and the kids that participate should be applauded.
But, maybe this can work both ways and to our advantage. Perhaps the seniors can teach the kids what it was like to live through a depression, WWII or the threat of eminent nuclear war.
How they had fun with out organized sports, TV, texting, drugs and alcohol.
How you respected authority, didn't whine because someone disagreed with you and could actually play football, basketball and football without being promised a snack after every game!

We're blogging about how Mr. McFeely is going to come down hard on underage drinking and other acts at high school dances and I go on the PG online site and what's the first article I read report.
"Gov. Tom Corbett announced plans today to privatize alcohol sales in the state -- allowing supermarkets and other outlets to sell beer and wine -- which he said would generate $1 billion to fund public education."
Now don't get me wrong - I think the state should get out of the liquor store business, but if Mr. McFeeley were smart he'd be jumping up and down encouraging the kids to drink hearty.
We could get that Taj Mahal paid off in no time with the increased revenue from sales taxes. LOL
Since brethalyzers don't detect drugs, the district has decided to implement mandatory blood testing in the old smoking area prior to entering the dance.

Since a breathalyzer can't detect sarcasm, the district has decided to implement a new non-verbal communication test prior to entering the dance.
The test will be administered under the strict guidelines of district's new Communications Program (JERC Investigations).
