They sure like to take care of themselves...

The agenda for Monday's School Board meeting has some items listed that should be highlighted.
June 18, 2012 School Board Meeting Agenda

(6) Approval of Administrative Salaries: RESOLVED, That the Board approves the 2012-2013 list of annual salary adjustments for administrators effective July 1, 2012, reflecting an average increase of 3.0%.

*(7) Act 93 Administrative Agreement: RESOLVED, That the Board approves the Act 93 Administrative Pay for Performance Plan as presented effective July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017.

Whereas Upper St. Clair administrative salaries are frozen, here in Mt. Lebanon where students are charged for parking, our administrators get a 3.0% increase.  Nice, huh?
I believe Jan Klein falls under Act 93. I haven't heard the podcast yet, but is this an increase or a decrease?

And the infamous Nello Change Order has entered the picture again.

*(6) High School Project Change Order #GC-001: RESOLVED, That the Board approves Change order GC-001 dated June 7, 2012 to Nello Construction in the amount of $189,306 for the importing of new earth material and changes in waterproofing and grade beam work substantially in the form presented.

*All matters of new business were considered and discussed by the Board at its Discussion Meeting on June 11, 2012, except as noted (*).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports the following:
"The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) decreased 0.3 percent in May on a
seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 1.7 percent before seasonal adjustment."

Now I'm not sure I buy the BLS CPI figures - some energy costs have indeed fallen, but anyone who has been to the grocery store lately knows those prices haven't gone down. I will point out that raises are often keyed to inflation as reported by the BLS. If one only considers the reported rate of inflation then the Administrators have done well.

Dear Blog reader, did you get, or will you get, a 3% raise this year? I hope you did, and you very well may have if you work for some government entity. But if you are an actual producer and did not get, or will not get, this kind of increase, you at least have the satisfaction of knowing where your tax dollars have gone.

Mary Birks is blaming Harrisburg again. We are to ask them to fix it. The administrators are doing a great job and deserve the raises, according to Mary. She wouldn't vote on the budget and was against charging kids for parking.
It should be interesting to see if this vote will be unanimous. I have seen this occur in the past. Disagreement during the discussion meetings, but then everyone caves and votes in favor of the superintendent's recommendations during the business meeting.

The reason everyone votes alike is to give the appearance of solidarity (note the word "appearance"). Often this technique is employed to keep reporters at bay.

I think taxpayers would prefer to see true discussion followed by honest votes rather than cave-ins. They also want to see where their elected representatives stand on issues.

We deserve better.
