Gearing up for the renovation

Mt. Lebanon High School parents, students, and visitors will be following new traffic patterns in the near future.  This letter was sent to parents and students along with the High School Campus Traffic Map. The District website goes into greater detail.
Student parking will only be available off-site at the Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church on Washington Road and in the Dixon Field parking lot along Cedar Boulevars [Boulevards]. There will be NO student parking on the high school campus during the school day.
Staff will continue to park on site.

Public meetings are relocating to Jefferson Middle School Library starting in February.  This includes school board meetings and policy committee meetings.  I hope this does not mean the end of televised meetings.  Check locations posted on http://www.lebocitizens.com/Lebo_Citizens/Meeting_Dates.html.

Gee, no bridge for the students to get across busy Washington Road, but the adult employees park on campus?

Hmmm, its all for the kids.

Here's the plan as I read it. Parents. Will drive up Morgan drive and turn LEFT onto Stadium Drive and proceed up to Horsman where they'll make a right to the South parking lot. Which they drive thru to make a right exit back down Morgan.

The problem is the arriving cars battle to proceed at the stadium and Morgan intersection with the cars coming down from the south lot to exit.

Why not have the arriving cars go up Morgan and make at left at the 2nd row of the South lot. Proceed to make a left on Horsman and the a left on Stadium and then left back onto Morgan to exit. That way no battles at intersections.

To make it really run smoothly and this would take a change in the one way street just down Cochran from Lebanon, make the cards that want to drop off from Cochran, go instead to Lebanon, drop off there and go down the hill to turn right (what is now a one street in the wrong direction) or proceed to Cedar.

Doing this would make both routes continuous flows and eliminate bottle necks.

What about the Commissioners Lot for the students ? Think about the poor teachers & staff who will have to walk an extra 100 yards to buildings B and G if they are required to use the Commissioners Lot instead of the South Lot...in the rain & snow no less. I'm sure the SB will give them EDR comp for the inconvenience.

The Dixon Field Lot is more than 1,200 ft. from the school buildings...pity the poor students !

Dick, do ya think the traffic engineers came up with that plan? We probably paid them good money to work that out. Now your plan makes more sense, but the SB only works with paid professionals. In their community.

Crrection:
"Proceed to make a left on Horsman and the a left on Stadium and then left back onto Morgan to exit"

that should read right onto Morgan to exit.

We never did see the Lutheran Church parking agreement in its final form. Our solicitor and Dr. Tim were going to sign the final agreement. I don't know if Dr. Tim was going to sign it as a representative of the school district or as a parishioner of his church.

Also, it might've a good idea for the photography club to take pictures of the church lot before the students start to use it. From what I remember, we will restore the lot to its original condition.

Ok, I'll bite. Why do I think the corner of Morgan and Stadium Drives will be a choke point for drivers?

"What, me worry?" - all good ideas on the blog, but why bother? The school board collectively has all the answers to all things and doesn't need to consider feedback from those pesky little stakeholders in the community. After all, they know more about economics, construction, traffic flow or 21st century education than anyone else.

Anon 3:50 think about it. As you try to turn left off of Morgan onto Stadium, the people coming down the hill after dropping the kids at Stadium and Horsman have to hit the stop sign at Morgan and Stadium. Theyeither wait for ALL the arriving cars to clear turning left onto Stadium or everybody alternates. That's the bottleneck.
By have arriving cars go all the way to the top and then turn left into the South lot, and the departing vehicles leaving via Stadium then right onto Morgan - no has to stop or try to make a left in front of oncoming traffic.
It becomes one continuous loop.

Making a left hand turn on Cedar was never a picnic. The traffic coming down Greenhurst in the morning was nonstop.

Anon 5:59, the traffic coming up Morgan has a stop sign. So, it's no different than any other two way stop intersection - you alternate. Just like the hundreds of two way or four way intersections around town. It's going to be inconvenient and different while the project is underway, but complaining about every little inconvenience won't make it go any faster and it certainly won't make it go away.

Gee, and I thought traffic in and around the high school area was bad NOW...

Anon 7:15 no ones complaining just suggesting a more efficient traffic flow. My kids don't get driven to the HS and I can avoid Cochran & Cedar. So fine.

Anon 5:35 sent me a map which I posted as an update. Thanks for trying to improve the situation. I am just glad that my kids are no longer going to the high school and I will avoid the area completely.

Has the Municipality *blessed* the abomination proposed by the District ? These are all public streets....the traffic plan approved for a completed project was controversial enough and subject to change after review of actual traffic flow. This plan will be devestating for residents in the immediate area both in terms of traffic flow and residential street parking, requirements and laws for which many parents and students will not follow or obey.

MLPD better order extra supplies of ticket books.

Anon 11:19 AM, I believe they did. I am in the process of looking up old agendas and then verifying it on the podcast.

So far, I found the approval of stop signs at Morgan and Stadium Drives.

9/26/11 minutes

The stop signs wouldn't be needed if they reversed the flow as suggested and made arriving traffic proceed up Morgan to the South Parking lot.
Why make people make two unnecessary stops? Wasting gas, wasting time.
But hey, if parents are OK with that, not my problem.

I just listened to the October 11, 2011 podcast of the commission meeting. In it, Matt Kluck brings up concerns about the traffic AND whether the entire plan complies with the ordinances and requested a review.
Here is the link:

Here is the portion of the podcast where Matt Kluck expresses his concerns about the project and Keith McGill disagrees with him.
Kluck's concerns
It is 1 minute and 26 seconds long.

Both Matt and Dan Miller voted against the traffic plan and traffic circulation plan proposed by the District for the completed project; and, it will be subject to review and reconsideration in what now amounts to about 4.5 years from now.

This confusing scheme during construction has not been before the Traffic Board or Commission in any public sessions....there may have been internal review by the Municipal Planner and Trans Assoc. (Muni Traffic Engineer), something those concerned should look into.

Good enough for government work.

Want to think about this horror story? What about the students going south on 19 and are trying to make a left hand turn into the church parking lot? During rush hour? And what about the students trying to leave at the end of the day and want to go south on 19? They will also have to allow fellow students to cross the street there.

I have to add this comment. When a resident asked Vice President Cappucci about the church parking agreement, he was told that he will have to file a Right To Know request.
