Groundbreaking Ceremony is today

It's a Great Day for the Mt. Lebanon School District!
It has been a long time coming, but the day is finally here to celebrate the groundbreaking of our new high school. The ceremony is set for 4:00p.m., rain or shine, this afternoon on the lawn near the Fine Arts Theatre. Come hear the Marching Blue Devil Band, the Triple Trio and the High School Chamber Choir. Students hand painted all the hard hats that will be worn by the participants. Join us for a reception in the upper lobby of the Fine Arts Theatre following the ceremony. Let's Celebrate!

Update January 27, 2012 Video of Groundbreaking Ceremony

Update January 28, 2012  I am sorry.  I can't resist. This picture of the groundbreaking ceremony was sent to me.

Anyone go to the groundbreaking ceremony? I heard it was just like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. ;)

A school superintendent in another district recently noted how architectural standards have changed in the last 100 years:
It used to be that building churches was the thing to do. Then, in the 1930s or 1940s, that changed to constructing high schools. Today it's athletic fields.
I don't think any further comment is needed.

The groundbreaking was a fantastic event! Triple Trio, the marching band, SB President Posti's speech--all inspiring. Mt. Lebanon should be proud that after four years the ground has been broken and construction is beginning. It's a great day for Lebo!

Yeah. It's a great day for Lebo alright. They have started to dig the hole that they will be throwing our tax dollars down. Certainly gets me excited.

Mr. Ruch, are you the same person from the class of '32 who is credited with writing the words to our Alma Mater?

Whoever posted Mr. Ruch's comment is truly despicable. Mr. Ruch passed away in 1998.
Is everyone that embarrassed by the renovation project, that they have to sink to this level?

The man who wrote, "Radiant with splendor, valor, virtue, and truth."
would be very upset indeed.

May the author of the comment that was signed by "Mr. Ruch" remember what he or she has done every time Mt. Lebanon's Alma Mater is played.

Shame on you! And shame on the school board for not putting this building project to a referendum vote. There's nothing like taxation without representation to ruin a community.

I recognized his name immediately, but at that hour of the night, I published it. What tipped me off was that someone was actually inspired by Josephine Posti's speech. Who would make such a statement?

Word on the street is that turnout was poor. After factoring out staff and students required to be there, I hear it was just school board directors and the VOICE members. 100 people max. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I just added the link to the groundbreaking video as an update on this post. I thought the community was evenly divided on this project, Ed. Where are the other 4,000 people?

Working to pay for it!

I saw the video this morning, Elaine. I'd be surprised if the total count were over 80. And at least half the bodies there were under 16 years old. And to your point, I thought the community was wholly behind this project? So why weren't there a few thousand people present?

This whole concept of "Let's Celebrate!" baffles me.
Here we are tearing down a building that we paid millions for and tearing up perfectly good tennis courts, all for the privilege of going $110+ million deeper in debt.
I understand that the high school needed major repairs. Partially because past school boards didn't take the necessary steps to keep the building in pristine condition.
I wonder how many if us, when faced with major house renovations say... "hey, we just put ourselves deeper in debt... "Let's Celebrate!"
Can't believe what lemmings we are!
