TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE!

My mailbox is being flooded with emails complaining about the eblast that was just sent. This is totally inappropriate, using municipal email/resources to raise private funds for a private field. It is my understanding that Sandy Kyper works in the Recreation Department with David Donnellan.

Subject: Mt. Lebanon Field Improvement Project

As you may know, the Mt. Lebanon Commission approved a plan to install artificial turf at Wildcat and Middle Fields, and allocated approximately $750,000 towards the completion of this important field improvement project.

Adding artificial turf at this location will undoubtedly benefit all of our community recreation and athletic programs, from youth soccer, lacrosse and baseball all the way up through our varsity high school programs; and it will create the opportunity for some much-anticipated adult league play.

The funds allocated by the Commission are conditioned upon a non-municipal, private contribution of approximately $250,000. Through the generosity of Mt. Lebanon's various youth sports associations, over $100,000 has been raised so far.

If you would like to make a TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation to the Turf Project Fund, donations will be received and held by the Mt. Lebanon Community Endowment. Please visit the link below to make your tax deductible contribution online:
 http://www.mtlebanonendowment.org/contributions/field-improvement-project/
The deadline for contributions is May 13, 2014.
Mt. Lebanon, are you going to tolerate this? Why are we allowing it to continue? This project is a WANT by Dave Brumfield, Dave Franklin, and David Donnellan.

Just how big was this eblast? OMG! Why wasn't I on the list? ;)

we support youth athletics, but we oppose waste and abuse of public funds, perhaps this is why we were not on the eblast mailing list either

that said, with or without private contributions the true question is whether turfing the fields, any of them, is desirable, safe, or economically appropriate given the state of our local finances and the existing tax burden....grass, even mud, has hurt no generation so far

You are absolutely correct, Elaine. This is shameful. The bar has been permanently lowered in Mt. Lebanon. I'm sure the SAB, four commissioners and a select few residents are very proud of themselves.

I received it. I get frequent emails for rec center activities from this address.

It's municipal employee time taken up for private fundraising.

People literally GO TO JAIL for this stuff!

Are the Commissioners aware of this? The Township is now pimping for the deadbeat athletic supporters. These are the freeloaders in Mount Lebanon - not the newcomers.

Almost everything about Mt Lebanon politics is inappropriate. I'm just not surprised by anything they do anymore. It's embarrassing to be in the same political party as them. I completely give up with the Democrats in this town. If this is what they are about then I don't even want to help them get re-elected.

2:52 PM, yes, the commissioners are aware of this. I sent them an email. commission@mtlebanon.org

Great, I am helping to pay the salary of a municipal employee to privately fundraise for a turf project that could make me physically ill, oh and I am paying for that too.

What a messed up situation this is for the community.

Inappropriate? It's just plain wrong. The municipality is promoting citizen donations to the non-municipal share of project without acknowledging there are legitimate safety issues involved with this undertaking for our environment and health. They are also doing this when they have not provided the same support to other citizen driven projects. That's not called "unique", it's called political favoritism and corruption.

If I had read that headline before I moved here, I wouldn't have moved here.

The Almanac says, "The municipality aims to approve the project in May, bid it in June and begin construction in August."

I'm betting the cash is not paid by May, June or August.

The letter's "Through the generosity of Mt. Lebanon's various youth sports associations, over $100,000 has been raised so far." = another fabricated lie. A hefty percentage of the pledges are from corporate donors, no? It is also ridiculous that a Commissioner would refuse to disclose the amount that a soccer association has donated to this PUBLIC property project.

8:06 AM, I only asked of one corporate donor, because that is the only one I was aware of through my RTK. I went back to the Commission video and checked again to see what John Bendel told me during Citizen Comments. At the April 28 meeting, we will find out what the breakout between the PLEDGES and the cash on hand as of the end of March. On May 13, we may find out what those numbers are for April. Considering the timeline of the toxic turf project, it is crucial to have the breakout as of the May 13 meeting (YTD). Check the meeting video at 00:06:52 to hear John Bendel's explanation.
