Gifted student has to walk divided PA Court says
As President Judge Mary Hannah Leavitt noted in the court's majority opinion, Mount Lebanon is a "walking district" and only provides transportation for students who are disabled.
The gifted seventh grader walks 1.3 miles from his home to the middle school, then another 4/10ths of a mile to the high school for his first-period geometry class. He is given a ride back to the middle school so he can get to his second-period class on time, Leavitt noted.

This gifted math high school issue is actually a legit problem. It isn’t just the transportation problem. It’s how kids get Selected for advancement team. The district created its own curriculum based measurement which is devoid of authentic, reliable predictive validity and routinely results in the exclusion of extremely talented children. The entire math promotion issue is a hot button issue for countless parents and students. Getting kids to the high school and back is just a slight reflection of how the district has mishandled math education for years and years. The kids should be taught geometry at their middle school. They miss part of their classes at the middle school due to the transpo issues and wander aimlessly without good oversight frequently due to random events at either school interrupting the normal sequence of events. Forget about he admin “Listening”. Be ready to fight if you have issues with math advancement and the math teachers at the middle school say they lack the funding to fix these problems.
Eh. My son went to first period math at the high school then back to Jefferson without issue. This seems like a cyclone in a coffee carafe.
While we're on the subject of gifted programs, I heard something about students this year had their scores disqualified because something went wonky during the NMSQT. Anybody?

If your child is truly gifted best advise LEAVE THIS DISTRICT. Lebo can't meet their needs.

why can't the child take the class electronically from Jefferson? The child would have no transportation problems and less likely to be picked on by the older kids. I hear Lebo has the technology to do this! perhaps the teacher union wont allow this?
Why doesn't the Gifted teacher go to the children? As an a therapist who travels between location, I would think mileage would be cheaper than buses. Just sayin...
Parents of bon JES and WES students who have had a 5th grader accelerated- wasn't there a bus that picked up your 5th grader to take them to the appropriate middle school for math class during their 5th grade year?
