Mt. Lebanon School Board Appoints Capital Campaign Director
August 12, 2013
Alyssa DeLuca-New Capital Campaign Director and MLFE Executive Director

The Mt. Lebanon School Board unanimously approved Alyssa DeLuca as the Director of the Mt. Lebanon School District Capital Campaign and Executive Director of the Mt. Lebanon Foundation for Education (MLFE). Ms. DeLuca will work with the Superintendent, MLFE Board Chair and campaign leadership to raise $6 million in capital and endowment funds. She will serve as the primary staff support for a volunteer campaign committee and the MLFE Board in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors. Ms. DeLuca will lead campaign logistics and prospect management activities while establishing a long term development program for the District. She is expected to join the District on August 30.

Ms. DeLuca has been the Director of Development at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History for the past four years. Prior to that, she served as a Senior Communications and Marketing Consultant for Deloitte Services LP and the Director of Development and Communications for Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. She is a graduate of Duquesne University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies.

“We are very pleased to welcome Alyssa DeLuca to the District as our capital campaign director,” stated Superintendent Timothy Steinhauer. “She has a strong background in development and fundraising and will be a capable, enthusiastic leader for our capital campaign.”

Update August 13, 2013 3:19 PM According to last night's Personnel Report, Ms. Deluca will be paid $82,500 a year and will begin on Friday, August 30 (Labor Day weekend).

Update August 14, 2013 2:11 PM I added the link to the personnel report.

Update August 18, 2013 7:45 PM A Lebo Citizens reader submitted the following article, Stocks can't fix Pittsburgh's pension system fiscal woes, experts warn With Larry Lebowitz inquiring when they can borrow again, the board needs to keep this article in mind. Change it from the city to Mt Lebanon and the story could be the same.

As much as I think this project will fail, I hope beyond hope that it doesn't.

We could all use a successful campaign to help lower taxes.

However, I think the timing of this couldn't be worse as last night the Board voted to affirm the use of the capitalized interest, wrapped bonds for the second float of bonds.

Of course they did this to avoid a referendum (again) on a project that they are certain the entire community wants.

Anyway...good luck to Ms. DeLuca. If she isn't raising money for this project (the bonds are already floated) then what will she be raising money for?

The Urban League? Wonder how Jo "In the Ghetto" Posti feels about that. And dont tell anyone but this young lady attended...gulp...ssssshhhh....Ringgold.
Her job experience is very light. Way to go, school board. You've once again demonstrated how totally incompetent you are as a body. Good luck to Ms. Jackson Deluca. You, young lady, are about to discover how it feels to be at the bottom of the barrel. Get out before it's too late.

Great news, she appears to have excellent qualifications - only hope that she starts with the local lobbyists who insisted on the excessively designed high school facility! She could start with the BOSN, Kluck town hall picketers and Voice groups. It's all there on the internet, Alyssa. Surely they will be the first to give you a fat check!

It's time for these folks to put their money where their mouths are.

How long has it been since the $6 million goal was adopted by the school board ? Remember that this goal was a dramatic reduction from an original target goal of $30 million; and, that the $30 million was to preclude the necessity of a second bond issue. How embarrassing !

The time interval is indicative of time no longer being of the essence. A second bond issue in the $30 million magnitude that is wrapped, premium priced with above market interest rates and interest capitalized will be issued. Taxes to cover what are in reality excessive debt service costs will be imposed. And the district has the gall to ask for $6 million more ?

Can't wait to see the donor list.

The donor list is the sucker list.

Alyssa Deluca was a teacher at PA Cyber School. Same one? http://www.ratemyteachers.com/alyssa-deluca/1446126-t

Deluca was the solicitor to the Mt. Lebanon Parking Authority.

Deluca is a common name, right? I am not being sarcastic, just asking.

Don't go to Heinz for any money. They just cut 350 Pittsburgh jobs. http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/news/2013/08/13/heinz-cuts-600-jobs-350-in-pittsburgh.html?ana=e_pit_bn&u=j3qD9pCxJoSAscEnMkCZczHNMnU&t=1376405525
I don't think they would sponsor any signs either.

What are the reasons to have a $6,000,000 campaign?Has anyone heard any justification?

Lebo Citizens said...

The purpose was to reduce the amount the district must borrow to complete the $109 million project. Originally, $30 million was the target amount since $30 million was still needed for the high school renovation project. Now that they are going to wrap bonds, what IS the justification?

$6,000,000 for unspecified goals?

Anon said...

Maybe it's for Timmy's raise in 2014

Anonymous said...

Maybe the $6,000,000 is for change orders and pension payments for those grieving.

11:44, We can afford Dr. Steinhauer's raise.

Lebo Citizens said...

11.58 AM, can we? We just raised student parking $5,000. That went out the window for the five bonuses for the great job on the high school project. Can we when Timmy goes to the unions asking for concessions? Why would they agree to anything when he just keeps taking more and more for mediocre work, at best? It starts at the top. Lead by example.

When can we afford $5,000 bonuses for a $40,000,000 cost over run?

I updated this post with the personnel report which shows the appointment of the Capital Campaign Director.
I see lots of changes in the Finance Office too.

She looks like a very nice person, but my family will not be contributing. Sorry, but we're paying enough in taxes.

Anonymous said...

She looks like a proverbial naive deer in the headlights, but commanding an $82,000 per year salary. Plus generous benefits one presumes. How will all that be allocated between MTLFE and Pursuing Ketchup endeavors ?

Help me understand something...
When this position was first examined I thought the entire purpose was to raise enough money to fund the entire second float of bonds of about $30 million.

Well, on the same night this lady was hired, they just floated the entire second round of bonds.

Now when she knocks on your door and asks for a donation, what is she asking you to donate to if not the already funded high school project?

I do not envy her position. She has been set up to fail miserably and it won't be her fault. She should have been hired five years ago and given a shot to actually accomplish her goal.

The question now is whether or not she will raise enough to cover her salary and benefits each year. I don't think this is a given.

So 80k paid for with public money to go raise 6 million (which was once 30million) to offset the 30 million the board just agreed to borrow? Must be new math. Hey school board, if Dopey has 6 million and combines it with the 82k Snarky has under his mushroom pillow, is that greater than, less than or equal to the 30 million Sleazy has stashed in a cookie jar?
I've had it wrong the entire time. You school board directors arent crooks. You're just stupid.

If they have a second, and third fundraiser, etc., it won't be a one-time fee.

I told you it would be over $160,000.

The school board should be ashamed. I mean, if they were sane, rational, selfless people, they would...they all need to resign. Im not sure why they think their actions are ethical, legal or in the best interest of the community. I would ask them at the next meeting but they'll cross their arms, cower behind the solicitor and tell me to file a RTK. What a bunch of disgusting creatures.
And to anyone from outside Lebo thinking of moving here, you have better options. Much better.

Anonymous said...

I was just wondering where you can get access to previous or future personnel reports at the school board meetings. Thanks!

Lebo Citizens said...

Some school districts post them on their websites, but not Mt. Lebanon. You have to file a Right To Know.

I should add that you may be able to pick up a current copy at a school board meeting. Sometimes there are extra copies.

The school board has been hiding the personnel reports since they started paying substitutes on Step 1 instead of Steps 2-4.

Ms. Gillen,
Thank you for posting this link under updates. It points out the foolishness of buying municipal bonds from school districts. Sooner or later the districts will declare bankruptcy and pay the pensions with the bond money, just like Detroit.

You are right to worry about Larry wanting to borrow more money. This is the same man who imports foreigners to take his neighbor's job at a cut-rate salary after lying to the U. S. Government about not being able to find qualified American workers. And we elected him to our school board as an upstanding example to our community - what a sick joke.
