No Peace on Thanksgiving

A special school board meeting has been called for Monday, November 26, 2012 at 6:30 PM. This is for another change order for the Fine Arts Building.

Change Orders for High School Project: RESOLVED, That the Board approves Change Order GC-15-28 to Nello on a time and material basis not to exceed $80,500 for the construction of walls and ceilings in Building F.

http://www.mtlsd.org/district/stuff/special%20meeting%20agenda%20112612.pdf

A resident sent the following to me:
$80,500 change order for Nello to build a wall in Building F.
The $72,000 change order AB-02-17 on Monday was related to GC-11-24.
Change order GC-11-24 was for demolition work in building F.
Why wasn't this brought up during Monday's meeting?
Is the $80,500 change order for the same wall that the $72,000 change order is for?
Why does this special meeting have to be scheduled during the Commission Discussion Session when the Joint Maintenance Agreement will be discussed?

In the Pittsburgh post gazette: Mt. Lebanon school board to vote on $232,000 in change orders 11/15/12

"The district will pay $71,999 to Precision Environmental for demolition, abatement and reconstruction of some interior walls in the high school's fine arts department. Asbestos was discovered during abatement work in the summer, said Tom Berkebile, project manager at P.J. Dick, the construction management firm for the renovation.
"There was no indication that the partitions were infused with asbestos," he told the board during its discussion meeting on Monday.

Board member Daniel Remely contended that the problem should have been detected earlier and the cost included in the overall contract.

"That's near a thousand dollars a lineal foot," he said about the change order. "Something is not right."

A related change order calls for a $5,297 credit for the contracted cost of demolishing the affected partitions."

Mr. Remely, you thought something wasn't right in the fine arts department change order. Was that resolved and are you going to let this change order slide through too?

Does anyone else get the uneasy feeling that the last group the school board represents is that comprised of taxpayers and students?

Why not create a position as a trusted advisor to the SB? The position would be called Taxpayer Czar. The Czar would exist to be a voice for the taxpayers when considering expenditures.

Why not? We have mouthpieces for the parents, kids, frustrated middle age jocks and most importantly the teachers union. What we don't have is a voice for the people who pay the bills!

4:10 pm : Parents, some kids, middle aged jocks and teachers ARE taxpayers too!

3:45 yes you are correct, teachers are taxpayers too.
But there is a substantial difference between a taxpayer in the private sector and a teacher that works for a concern that will never fold up shop and has the power to raise revenue pretty much at will.
Consider also factors such as tenure, miniscule health insurance participation, retirement benefits and the incredible inside track to influence their own pay.

Consider this recent CBS report:
New study: Teachers are overpaid?
"January 16, 2012 by CBNews.com

"COMMENTARY: A new study by the Heritage Foundation found that, contrary to conventional wisdom, teachers are actually overpaid when you compare them with "comparable private sector workers."

They were careful to consider all types of variables, including accounting for the summer vacations that teachers have, and the number of hours actually worked (compared with the hours school is actually in session). They found that people who switched from private employment to teaching took a pay increase, while those who left teaching to work in the private sector took a pay decrease."

So yes, 3:45 teachers are taxpayers too, a special breed of taxpayer though. Keep that in mind, like a private sector employee has little say or vote in who sits on the company board that decides their pay raise.

Just caught the special school board meeting agenda posted on TV. Did anyone else notice that the change order is listed as $180,500 instead of $80,500?
