Please read Brian O'Neill's column in today's P-G about jaywalking. Elaine just put the link on her blog.

Thank you, Fake Lebo. You are spot on.

One question: Did all the commissioners vote in favor of the jaywalking ordinance?

They sure did. It was unanimous.

They sure are rocket scientists.

I think this whole situation deserves further examination since, according to last year's statistics (and we all know that the Commissioners SWEAR BY STATISTICS!), we have a 7 out of 10 (70%) chance of being hit IN a crosswalk instead of being hit jaywalking!

Could this new Ordinance be, in fact, Mt. Lebanon's secret weapon in its silent campaign to rid this community ONCE-AND-FOR-ALL of the scourge of pedestrian/
vehicle collisions? Isn't this really just an enhanced culling of pedestrians whereby the Commissioners are merely assisting the natural process of culling-by-vehicle by making sure that even more of the pedestrians are crossing the streets in the target-rich(est) environment? Isn't this rather like "baiting" before the "harvesting/removal/whatever you want to call it"? Seriously, folks: aren't we misplacing our sense of moral outrage by even considering challenging our ever-safety-conscious Commissioners? After all, these pedestrians are all going to die, anyway, aren't they? Isn't death on the front of a car preferable to starvation when their teeth wear down?

Just saying...

They are culling pedestrians. It is ironic that one of the few special things abou Mt Lebo is what the powers that be now are discouraging (i.e. Walking). They don't want the responsibility and they aren't honest enough to come up with real solutions.
