Dear Parents/Guardians & Students

Attached is an important letter regarding expectations for student behavior at school dances. A summary of the information in this letter was announced to all students, by me, this morning during first period. I ask that you review this letter with your son or daughter. Additional information regarding procedure/expectation changes for future dances will be shared at a later date.

Sincerely,

Brian R. McFeeley
Principal

Mr. McFeeley's letter is all well and good in certain respects, but the HS administration has a history of doing a lot of barking and not much biting - a fact, I might add, that has not been lost on the editors of the student newspaper, The Devil's Advocate.

That the administration felt it necessary to send a letter of this magnitude to parents suggests to me that the school is admitting failure to control what goes on within its own buildings (it took Mr. McFeeley TWO YEAR and seven dances to come to the realization that there is "underage drinking and inappropriate dancing"!).

If the school had been doing its job - for which the administrators get paid a handsome sum - it would have nipped this situation in the bud, and Mr. McFeeley's letter would not have been necessary.

I did learn this week that there was one child taken to the hospital for intoxication while the other kids from that group were given a breathalyzer from the Police and several were cited.

I asked Dr. Steinhauer about the grinding at the beginning of last year. He told me that the principal was addressing it, but if Dr. Steinhauer received too many complaints, he would just cancel the dances like other districts have done. If they enforced the rules, he felt that no one would come to the dances.

Elaine, they are all various ways one can falsely test postive for consumption of alcohilic beverages.

Just another empty threat by ineffective Administrators.
When things really got serious the senior boat ride was canceled. Timmy likes his raise but he doesn't have the courage to cancel the dances or do anything about underage drinking - or drugs.indlesc

There are obvious violations of school policies (e.g. KFA, JIC, JICH, etc.)and have been for years. While actual policies indicate penalties for violations, do the follow-on administrative procedures and/or guidelines for such policies waive or suggest lenient enforcement ?

Why does the Principals letter not spell out that strong enforcement will occur and clearly define penalty and punishment consequences for violations ?

Elaine, just an anonymous comment about the letter regarding the school district dances. I refer to these letters as, " dispatches from the bubble. ". ( tongue
in cheek). The district only enforces the policies when it serves their purpose or they make up policies to serve their purpose.

We now find through the Municipality that 5 students were arrested by the MLPD for undersage drinking at the homecoming dance.

Why didn't the principal include that in his letter to parents to enforce that there are consequences for not obeying the laws and District policies ?

Did the underage drinkers ad grinders walk with their class at graduation, Brian?
